Bandits burn Niger police station, church, abduct five in fresh attack

Bandits have again attacked Agwara local government area of Niger State, burning the divisional police station and a church and abducting about five residents in an early morning raid. The gunmen stormed Agwara in the early hours of Sunday, first overrunning the local police station before setting it ablaze. They later moved to the United Methodist Church in the town, where they burnt part of the building. This is the same area where about 300 pupils, students and teachers of St Mary’s Catholic School were abducted last year. Niger State police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the bandits invaded the station at about 3:40 a.m. A police tactical team engaged them but was eventually overpowered.
