UNGA 2025: African Leaders Demand Ownership of Innovation, Push for Self-Reliant Future

At the 2025 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), African leaders and innovators made a strong case for greater ownership of development and innovation, stressing that the continent must shape its future with or without foreign aid. The message was delivered at a side event convened by eHealth Africa in partnership with Population Services International (PSI), the Population Council, and Reach Digital Health, under the theme: “African-led Innovation: Shaping Sustainable Futures With or Without Aid.” Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, said decades of donor-driven development created systems without true African ownership. “Africans have always innovated. Survey: Nigerians among strongest supporters of global cooperation

Nigerians rank among the world’s top advocates for international cooperation, according to a new global survey by The Rockefeller Foundation. This places Nigeria in the top five globally, alongside India (81%), South Korea (73%), and Kenya (72%). South Africa followed closely with 70%. Why Nigerians support cooperation William Asiko, Vice President for Africa at The Rockefeller Foundation, said the findings reflect Nigeria’s awareness of global interdependence. “Africans want a system of international cooperation that is not only effective but also equitable,” he said. Ndidi Nwuneli, president of the ONE Campaign and a board member at the Foundation, stressed the importance of collective action at a time when trust in global institutions is waning. […]

Palestinians Urge US to Restore Abbas Visa Before UNGA

The office of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called on the United States to reverse its decision to revoke the leader’s visa just weeks before the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Washington’s move, announced Friday, also rescinded visas for 80 other Palestinian officials who were due to attend the high-level meetings next month. Abbas has regularly addressed the General Assembly and typically leads the Palestinian delegation. “We call upon the American administration to reverse its decision,” presidential spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh told The Associated Press on Saturday, warning that the move “will only increase tension and escalation.” He added that Palestinian officials have been in constant contact with Arab and foreign countries since Friday and would continue diplomatic efforts. Abu Rudeineh also urged the international community to pressure the US administration, especially in light of a high-level conference […]
