Turkey orders arrest of 29 footballers in widening betting scandal
Turkish prosecutors have ordered the arrest of 29 footballers and officials as part of a fast expanding investigation into illegal betting and possible match fixing in the country’s professional leagues. Authorities in Istanbul said the latest warrants form part of a wider probe that has already seen eight people, including a top flight club president and several referees, arrested in recent weeks. The investigation is focused on insider gambling and allegations that some players and officials placed bets on matches in which they were directly involved, in clear breach of football regulations and national sports integrity laws.
