BBC Apologises to Trump Over Panorama Edit but Refuses Compensation
The BBC has formally apologised to former US President Donald Trump for an episode of Panorama that edited and spliced segments of his 6 January 2021 speech, admitting it gave “the mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action.” The corporation said it will not re-air the 2024 programme but rejected Trump’s demand for a $1bn compensation, citing no legal basis for a defamation claim. Lawyers for Trump have threatened to sue the BBC unless it issues a retraction, apology, and financial compensation, but the BBC insisted the edit was not designed to mislead and did not cause Trump harm as he was later re-elected.
