Mismanagement, governance gaps undermining Nigerian universities – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has warned that mismanagement of funds and weak governance structures are undermining the quality and stability of Nigerian universities. The union says poor leadership practices, political interference and lack of accountability are eroding standards across public institutions.​ ASUU leaders accuse some university administrators of diverting or misusing resources meant for teaching, research and staff welfare. They also criticise what they describe as a growing culture of patronage in appointments, contract awards and promotions, which they say undermines merit and transparency.​ The union argues that repeated encroachment on university autonomy by government agencies has weakened internal governance and encouraged arbitrary decisions. Fed Govt sets up team for 1m digital skills drive

The Federal Government has inaugurated a Joint Implementation Committee to plan a National Digital Literacy Conference and oversee the training and certification of one million Nigerians in digital and emerging skills.​The committee’s work supports Nigeria’s target of reaching 95 percent digital literacy by 2030 under the national digital economy agenda.​ The committee was inaugurated in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, represented by Permanent Secretary Ibrahim Kana, during the launch of the ClergyWealth Digital Skills Nigeria (SkillUp) Initiative.​Kana described the move as a major step in deepening digital literacy, building human capital and driving inclusive digital transformation in line with government priorities.​ He stressed that the SkillUp Initiative, run under the Future Proof Economy Model, is completely funded and implemented by ClergyWealth Cooperative Society Limited, with no financial commitment from the Federal Government.​He […]

TETFund Launches Solar Electrification Project To End Power Crisis In Nigerian Campuses

For decades, unstable electricity has crippled teaching, research, and learning in Nigerian universities and polytechnics. Lecture halls go dark mid-presentation, experiments are interrupted in laboratories, and ICT centres often shut down without warning. Now, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has unveiled a major intervention aimed at solving this age-long problem. Under its 2025 disbursement guidelines, the Fund has allocated billions of naira to provide solar-powered mini-grids in selected tertiary institutions across the country. Working in partnership with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), TETFund plans to deliver reliable, clean, and sustainable energy to power classrooms, hostels, laboratories, libraries, and administrative blocks in 12 institutions across the six geopolitical zones.
