Presidency: Amaechi misled Nigerians on new tax law

The Presidency has accused former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi of misleading Nigerians with false claims about a new tax law that allegedly allows automatic deductions from bank accounts. In a statement, presidential aide Bayo Onanuga said Amaechi’s comments about “Tax Act No 25” and post 2027 enforcement were untrue and designed to create fear. Amaechi had claimed in a viral video that if the ruling All Progressives Congress remains in power after the 2027 elections, a tax policy would activate automatic debits on bank transfers and balances. He questioned why the law was not already in force, suggesting it was being delayed to avoid public backlash before the next polls. Onanuga dismissed these statements as “egregious lies”, insisting there is no provision in Nigeria’s new tax framework that authorises such automatic debits from citizens’ bank accounts. He alleged that […]

Oyedele reminds Nigerians of March 31 deadline for individual tax returns

Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has urged Nigerians to file their annual tax returns within the deadlines set by law. He said employers must file their annual returns for employees, including pay projections and tax deductions, by January 31 each year. Individuals, including salary earners, must file their self assessment tax returns by March 31 for the previous fiscal year. Speaking during a webinar for HR managers, payroll officers, chief financial officers and tax managers, organised with the Joint Revenue Board, Oyedele warned that compliance levels remain very low nationwide. He noted that even in the most advanced states, less than five per cent of eligible individuals file returns. He explained that employees often assume that once employers deduct tax from their salaries, they have no further obligation. He stressed that this […]

Nine states take lead on new tax harmonisation laws

Nine states have so far domesticated Nigeria’s new tax harmonisation laws designed to end multiple taxation and uncoordinated levies. The states are Bayelsa, Anambra, Ekiti, Gombe, Kogi, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kwara and Zamfara, while 27 others are still at various stages of adoption. The reforms build on a model Tax Harmonisation Law developed by the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee for states and local governments. The aim is to tackle illegal collections, remove non-state actors from revenue drives and create a clearer, more predictable tax environment for businesses and citizens. Committee chairman Taiwo Oyedele said it is vital for states to pass their own harmonisation laws to address multiple taxation at sub-national level. The Joint Revenue Board described the early moves by the nine states as a key step towards eliminating illegal tax collection and improving the fiscal climate. […]

Tinubu can’t unilaterally suspend tax law, Oyedele insists as lawyers push back

Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, says President Bola Tinubu and the executive arm have no constitutional power to suspend implementation of the new tax reform laws despite the controversy over alleged alterations. He argued that once a bill has been duly passed by the National Assembly, signed by the president and gazetted, it becomes an Act that can only be amended or repealed by parliament, not frozen by executive order. Oyedele also clarified that the reforms comprise four separate tax laws, two of which came into effect immediately upon assent, while the remaining two are scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026. He maintained that the disputed “multiple tax” regulations circulating online are fake and urged Nigerians to allow lawmakers conclude their investigation into alleged errors in the gazetted texts. However, several senior […]

FG insists it did not alter new tax laws

The Federal Government has denied allegations that it secretly altered provisions of the newly signed tax reform laws before they were published in the official gazette. The Presidency said the laws now in force reflect what President Bola Tinubu signed and that any claims of changes made outside due process are unfounded. Presidential officials stressed that neither the President nor any authorised aide instructed anyone to tamper with the content of the tax bills passed by the National Assembly. They maintained that the executive respected the outcome of legislative debates and followed the standard procedure from passage to presidential assent and gazetting. Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, urged critics to allow the House of Representatives ad hoc committee to complete its investigation into the alleged discrepancies. He said any genuine errors or inconsistencies […]

Oyedele Urges Governors to Borrow for Infrastructure Only

The Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has advised state governors to borrow money only for building infrastructure that spurs economic growth, not for routine government spending. Speaking at the launch of a report on state finances in Abuja, Oyedele expressed concern over the rising debt levels of state governments. He clarified that borrowing is not inherently bad, but its purpose is what matters. “There is nothing wrong with borrowing; what matters is what you are borrowing for?” he stated. “We need to borrow less for recurrent spending, if at all, and borrow responsibly for infrastructure and productivity.” He commended states like Abia, Enugu, and Lagos, which allocate over 70% of their budgets to capital projects like roads and schools. He also revealed that new tax laws coming into effect next year will shift […]
