China masks South China Sea drone flights in likely Taiwan drill

China has been flying a large military drone over the South China Sea while broadcasting false electronic signals that make it appear to be other aircraft, including a Belarusian cargo jet and a British Typhoon fighter, according to flight data reviewed by analysts. Military attaches and security experts say at least 23 such flights have been recorded since August under the call sign YILO4200, linked to a Wing Loong 2 drone flying from Qionghai Boao airport on Hainan island. The drone’s transponder repeatedly used registration codes belonging to genuine foreign aircraft, a tactic they believe is a real time test of deception methods that could be used in a conflict over Taiwan. The flights trace long, looping routes over sensitive areas of the South China Sea, including waters near Chinese submarine bases, the Philippines, Vietnam and towards the Bashi Channel […]

China critic Jimmy Lai jailed 20 years in landmark Hong Kong case

Hong Kong media tycoon and prominent China critic Jimmy Lai has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in the city’s most high profile national security case. The ruling caps a legal battle that has lasted nearly five years and has drawn widespread international concern. Lai, the 78 year old founder of the now closed pro democracy newspaper Apple Daily, was convicted on two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and one count of publishing seditious materials. The judges said his offences fell within the harshest penalty tier for national security crimes of a grave nature. The court described Lai as the mastermind of what it called persistent collusion conspiracies seeking sanctions, blockades and other hostile acts against China by foreign governments, including the United States. Prosecutors said the network behind him involved Apple Daily staff, activists and […]

Xi calls Taiwan key issue in US-China ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping has described Taiwan as the most sensitive and significant issue in relations between Beijing and Washington during a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, according to Chinese state media. During the exchange, Xi urged the United States to act with caution regarding arms sales to Taiwan, stressing that he places high importance on maintaining stable ties with the US. He expressed hope that both countries could manage disagreements through dialogue and mutual understanding. President Trump characterized the discussion as “excellent” and extensive. The call comes amid renewed diplomatic engagement between China and several Western countries, with leaders seeking to recalibrate relations with the world’s second-largest economy. Trump is expected to travel to China in April, a visit he has said he is eagerly anticipating. He also noted that Beijing is considering increasing its […]

China tells US its containment strategy is bound to fail

China has warned that United States efforts to contain its rise are doomed to fail, even as Beijing says it is willing to work with Washington to improve relations. Defence ministry spokesman Jiang Bin told a news briefing on Thursday that “facts have proven that any attempt to contain or block China is doomed to fail.” He added that China is ready to work with the US to promote stable ties ahead of President Donald Trump’s expected visit to China in April for talks with President Xi Jinping. The warning comes days after the US Department of Defense released its 2026 National Defense Strategy, which pledges to “deter China in the Indo Pacific through strength, not confrontation.” The new strategy adopts a softer tone than the previous one under former President Joe Biden, which labelled China as Washington’s most consequential […]

China warns citizens against Japan travel for Lunar New Year

China has urged its citizens to avoid travelling to Japan during next month’s Lunar New Year holiday, citing what it calls deteriorating public security and rising threats to Chinese nationals. The advisory comes amid a diplomatic spat after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested in November that Tokyo could intervene militarily if China attacked Taiwan. Beijing had already called on Chinese tourists to stay away from Japan following Takaichi’s comments, a move that contributed to a 45 percent year‑on‑year drop in Chinese visitors in December to around 330,000. Chinese tourists previously made up about a quarter of all foreign visitors, with nearly 7.5 million arrivals in the first nine months of 2025 and spending an estimated 3.7 billion dollars in the third quarter alone, helped by a weak yen. In a fresh statement on Monday, the foreign ministry’s Department of […]

China probes top generals Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli

China’s defence ministry says the Communist Party has opened investigations into senior military figures Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli for suspected serious violations of discipline and law. Zhang is a Politburo member and vice chairman of the powerful Central Military Commission (CMC), while Liu serves as chief of staff of the CMC Joint Staff Department. Zhang, 75, is widely regarded as President Xi Jinping’s closest ally in the People’s Liberation Army and one of the few top officers with combat experience. He is a key architect of China’s military modernisation and one of two CMC vice chairmen overseeing the country’s armed forces. The move is the latest step in Xi’s sweeping anti corruption drive, which has heavily targeted the military since 2012. In October 2025, eight top generals, including former CMC vice chairman He Weidong, were expelled from the party […]

Taiwan on high alert as China ends large scale drills

Taiwan has kept its military and coast guard on high alert even as Chinese naval and coast guard ships began pulling back after massive drills around the island. China’s “Justice Mission 2025” exercises saw dozens of rockets fired and large numbers of warships and aircraft deployed near Taiwan, prompting concern from Western allies. Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council said the maritime situation had started to calm, with Chinese vessels gradually leaving the area. All 11 Chinese coast guard ships that had been near Taiwan’s waters were reported to have moved away, though Taipei’s emergency response centres remain active. In the previous 24 hours, Taiwan’s defence ministry tracked 77 Chinese military aircraft and 25 navy and coast guard vessels operating around the island. It said 35 of those aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait median line, an unofficial boundary that China has increasingly […]

China stages major military drills around Taiwan

China has launched large-scale military exercises around Taiwan, simulating the seizure and blockade of key areas of the island, in what it says is a warning to “separatist forces”. According to the Chinese military, the drills involve the army, navy, air force and rocket force, and include live-fire exercises. The operation, code-named Justice Mission 2025, comes just days after the United States approved one of its largest-ever arms sales to Taiwan, valued at about $11bn. Beijing strongly condemned the deal and responded by sanctioning several US defence companies. China’s leadership has also criticised Taiwan’s efforts to strengthen its defence capabilities this year. Beijing claims Taiwan as part of its territory, despite the island being self-ruled for decades. Taiwan’s presidential office denounced the drills, saying they undermine regional stability and international norms. The defence ministry reported detecting Chinese aircraft and naval […]

Japan denies report Trump told PM not to provoke China

Japan has denied a media report claiming that United States President Donald Trump told Prime Minister Fumio Kishida not to provoke China over Taiwan during their recent talks in Washington. The report had suggested that Trump urged Japan to act cautiously on Taiwan so as not to increase tensions with Beijing. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi dismissed the account when asked about it in Tokyo. He said it was not true that Trump had given such a warning to Kishida. Hayashi stressed that the discussions between the two leaders were consistent with Japan’s existing policy on China and Taiwan. The US and Japan have repeatedly said they want peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. Both governments have also agreed to deepen security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region in response to China’s growing military activities. Hayashi declined to reveal detailed […]
