Ghana declares forests, rivers Security Zones in galamsey fight

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Acting Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has declared all forest reserves and river bodies in Ghana as Security Zones, reaffirming government’s uncompromising commitment to the fight against illegal mining (galamsey). He made the declaration at the closing ceremony of a week-long intensive training programme for personnel of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in Sunyani. The Minister commended the task force for its achievements since its establishment in June, including the arrest of more than 1,000 illegal miners, the repossession of nine restricted forest reserves, and the confiscation of over 900 water pumps, later reassigned to the Ministry of Agriculture for irrigation purposes. “These are not mere statistics. They are victories; victories for our land, for our water, and for our people,” he said. Mr. Buah stressed […]

Gold Board CEO denies galamsey claims, backs anti-mining fight

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has dismissed suggestions that the newly established body is promoting illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. “Let me clear some misconceptions that GoldBod is promoting galamsey. And my simple question to them is: how can a five-month-old statutory corporation be responsible for an age-long problem?” he said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, during a discussion on the government’s fight against illegal mining. Mr. Gyamfi emphasized that galamsey existed long before GoldBod and had already reached alarming levels before the institution was set up. “Last year there was no GoldBod, but we saw widespread protests against galamsey because the problem had reached unprecedented levels. So how can you say that a corporation established barely five months ago is to blame?” he asked. He clarified that GoldBod’s legal mandate is […]

EPA Engages Media on Land Reclamation, Vows Miner Crackdown

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held a media engagement in Kumasi to spotlight its land reclamation campaign and issued a firm warning: all legal mining operations must comply with reclamation regulations or face enforcement action. Non-compliant legal miners will be prosecuted and have operations halted, the agency stated. What We Found In a briefing held on July 29, 2025, EPA officials emphasized that land reclamation is mandatory under environmental law—not optional. They engaged journalists to amplify public understanding of reclamation duties and enforcement mechanisms. The EPA reaffirmed that failure to rehabilitate mined-out sites exposes operators to penalties, including suspension of permits, fines, or closure—regardless of whether the entity is operating legally. This media outreach is part of a broader strategy that includes intensified surveillance, joint operations with security agencies, and cooperation with the Minerals Commission to ensure all registered miners […]

Illegal Mining Fight: A Marathon, Not a Sprint – Lands Minister

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah‑Kofi Buah, has emphasized that Ghana’s battle against illegal gold mining—locally known as galamsey—is a long-term "marathon," not a sprint. He stressed that decisive, sustained efforts are required to protect the environment, water bodies, and future generations. Why This Matters Systemic governance challenge: Less than 40 of over 800 mining‑related cases have been prosecuted successfully in courts, highlighting the need for legal reform and faster adjudication. Large-scale environmental destruction: Around 16% of Ghana’s land reserves have been degraded due to galamsey, affecting river lives, forests, and biodiversity. Strategy & Reforms 1. Fast‑Track Court for Miners Buah is advocating for a special court to expedite trials against illegal miners, arguing traditional courts are too slow to deter offenders. He has raised the idea with senior officials including the Attorney General and Chief Justice. […]

Ghana to Implement Excavator Import Permit System to Curb Illegal Mining

In a significant policy shift, President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana will introduce a permit system for the importation of excavators. This move is part of broader efforts to combat illegal mining activities, commonly known as 'galamsey', which have led to widespread environmental degradation across the country. The Rationale Behind the Permit System Speaking at the Mining in Motion Conference in Accra, President Mahama highlighted the alarming proliferation of excavators in Ghana, stating that the country currently possesses more excavators than the rest of Africa combined. He emphasized that this unchecked influx of heavy machinery has been a major contributor to the escalating illegal mining crisis. The new policy, dubbed "No Permit, No Excavator," mandates that all excavator imports must be accompanied by an official permit. This measure aims to ensure that only authorized entities engage in mining […]
