RHI: First Lady urges governors’ wives to deepen grassroots impact

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged governors’ wives to use the Renewed Hope Initiative to deliver more practical projects that directly touch people at the grassroots. She reminded them that, as state coordinators of the Initiative, they are well placed to identify real needs in communities and implement programmes that support vulnerable families, women and youths. The First Lady stressed that the Renewed Hope Initiative is designed to complement, not replace, their individual state projects, and that collaboration will help extend support to every part of the country. She highlighted key RHI focus areas, including food support through state level food banks, educational scholarships, economic empowerment, agriculture support and health interventions for disadvantaged groups. Mrs Tinubu appealed to the governors’ wives to see their positions as opportunities to serve, saying that their compassion and readiness to act are […]

Presidency explains rise in 2026 budget to N58trn

The Presidency says the proposed 2026 federal budget of N58.18 trillion is aimed at consolidating reforms, boosting growth and tackling security and social challenges, not just expanding spending for its own sake. The aggregate expenditure is about six per cent higher than the 2025 estimate of N49.7 trillion, reflecting what officials describe as a more ambitious but targeted fiscal plan. According to presidential officials, the increase is driven mainly by higher allocations to defence, internal security and law enforcement in response to persistent insurgency, banditry and other threats. The 2026 plan earmarks about N5.41 trillion for security related spending, making it one of the largest single components of the budget. The budget also scales up capital investment in infrastructure, including roads, rail, power and public assets needed to support private sector led growth. Government argues that sustained infrastructure funding is […]

Tinubu’s Reforms Deepening Poverty, Says Peter Obi

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying its much-publicised economic reforms are failing to lift Nigerians out of poverty. Obi’s comments followed a World Bank report released on October 8, 2025, which revealed that 139 million Nigerians now live below the poverty line—an increase from 87 million in 2023. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Obi described the figures as a “heartbreaking reflection” of how poorly the government’s policies have performed. “What this means is that in two years under the watch of the APC regime, over 50 million Nigerians were sent into poverty,” Obi wrote.“This is a heartbreaking reflection of how deeply our nation is failing its citizens.” He expressed concern that instead of treating the report as a wake-up call, the government dismissed it, […]

Nigeria’s Social Welfare in Poor State – Economists

The Nigerian Economic Society (NES) has raised concern over the country’s worsening social welfare, describing it as “ignominious” with over 133 million Nigerians facing deprivations in education, health, and living standards. Speaking in Abuja ahead of the NES 66th Annual Conference, the society’s president, Prof. Adeola Adenikinju, stressed that while Nigeria has recorded some progress in macroeconomic reforms, these gains have not translated into meaningful improvements for households and businesses. He noted that reforms introduced by the Federal Government had shown encouraging signs, such as a slight easing of inflation in July 2025. However, he maintained that inflation remains high and its impact on households uneven. “The reforms must be sustained, broadened, and translated into real economic benefits for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and households,” Adenikinju said. The NES president highlighted that Nigeria’s Multidimensional Poverty Index, last measured […]
