Niger State Warns Residents of Flood Risk from Dam Release
The Niger State Government has issued an urgent warning to residents living near the River Niger and River Kaduna to relocate to safer ground. This is due to the controlled release of water from four major hydroelectric dams: Kainji, Shiroro, Zungeru, and Jebba. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) stated that the dams are releasing thousands of gallons of water per minute. This will likely cause the rivers to overflow and flood surrounding communities. The Director-General of NSEMA, Abdullahi Baba-Arah, confirmed that flooding has already begun in 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs), damaging houses, farmlands, and roads.
