South Africa defends joint naval drills with Iran, Russia and China as vital for maritime security

South Africa has defended its decision to host joint naval exercises with Iran, Russia and China, saying the drills are essential for maritime security and regional cooperation. The week long Will for Peace 2026 exercise began off the country’s coast on January 9 and is being led by China.​ Officials in Pretoria said the manoeuvres are not aimed at any country but are focused on protecting sea lanes, combating piracy and safeguarding maritime economic activities. The South African Navy described the drills as a practical response to rising tensions at sea and the growing importance of secure shipping routes.​ Warships from China and Iran, including destroyers, are participating alongside Russian and Emirati corvettes, while South Africa has deployed a frigate.
