Man Who Drove Into Liverpool Title Parade Crowd Faces Sentencing

Prosecutors say 54 year old Paul Doyle steered his Ford Galaxy into dense crowds celebrating Liverpool’s record equalling 20th English top flight title in the city centre on May 26. He struck dozens of people over several minutes, at one point reversing into more victims and even colliding with an ambulance before the vehicle was finally brought to a stop. Investigators recorded 134 people injured, including children, with around 50 needing hospital treatment, though no one was killed. Prosecutors describe the incident as a severe case of road rage rather than terrorism, citing dashcam footage of Doyle swearing, leaning on his horn and then deliberately driving at pedestrians instead of waiting for them to pass. Guilty pleas and possible sentence Doyle initially denied wrongdoing but broke down in court during his trial in November and dramatically changed his plea. He […]

UK justice minister to unveil major court reforms

UK Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood is set to announce a sweeping package of court and sentencing reforms aimed at tackling crime and easing pressure on Britain’s overcrowded prisons. The plan will tighten early release rules for serious offenders, reduce the scope for automatic release, and expand the use of longer sentences for repeat and dangerous criminals. At the same time, the reforms will encourage alternatives to custody for low‑level, non‑violent offenders, including community sentences and rehabilitation programmes, in a bid to reduce reoffending and free up prison space for high‑risk inmates. The proposals are also expected to include measures to speed up court processes, cut case backlogs, and make greater use of technology such as remote hearings to improve efficiency across the justice system. Mahmood is due to present the reform package to Parliament, stressing that the changes are designed […]

Four Nigerians, Others Jailed 55 Years Over London Phone Robbery Spree

Four Nigerians—David Akintola, Ayomide Olaribiro, Olabiyi Obasa, and David Okewole—alongside six other accomplices were sentenced to a combined 55 years at Kingston Crown Court for a violent robbery spree targeting mobile phone shops, mostly EE outlets, across London and the UK. Between September and November 2024, the gang carried out 13 coordinated robberies, stealing £240,000 worth of phones and devices. They threatened staff to open secure stock rooms. The group was arrested after police traced DNA, call data, and vehicle records, catching four in the act in Kilburn. Sentences ranged from three to ten years for conspiracy to rob and attempted robbery, with most suspects pleading guilty. The Metropolitan Police recovered stolen devices and linked the suspects directly to the crimes through forensic evidence. The case underscores law enforcement successes against organized retail crime in London.

Nigerian Man Jailed in UK for Impersonating Female Nurse

A Nigerian man, Lucius Njoku, has been given a suspended prison sentence in the UK for fraudulently working in a hospital by impersonating a female nurse. Njoku, 33, used the identity of his friend, Joyce George, to work several shifts as a healthcare assistant at the Countess of Chester Hospital. He wore her NHS badge, which had her photograph, for two months before a patient confronted him about his identity. The court heard that the real nurse, Joyce George, had allowed Njoku to do her shifts under her name. She has since fled the UK, and a warrant has been issued for her arrest. Njoku admitted to fraud by false representation. He was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work. The judge condemned his actions for undermining crucial […]

A Moroccan student has been sentenced to one year in prison for his involvement in the recent youth-led protests, marking the first known jail term linked to the demonstrations. The student was convicted on charges of participating in an unauthorized gathering and insulting judicial police by providing false information. His lawyer has denounced the ruling as "unfair" and plans to appeal. The protests, organized by the anonymous "GenZ 212" collective, began in late September. They were initially sparked by the deaths of eight pregnant women at a hospital but have since expanded to demand broader social and political reforms. Human rights groups report that approximately 550 people are facing prosecution in connection with the protests, with many still in detention.
