Zelenskiy says US wants Ukraine war ended by summer

Zelenskiy said US officials indicated they would likely pressure both sides to keep to a timetable shaped partly by US mid term election politics. He criticised overnight Russian strikes on Ukraine’s power grid and energy facilities, saying Moscow must be stopped from using winter cold as a weapon. According to him, Russia launched more than 400 drones and about 40 missiles in the latest barrage, leaving over 1,000 apartment buildings in Kyiv without heating as families sheltered in metro stations. Zelenskiy said Ukraine […]

Russia open to new nuclear talks as treaty lapses

Russia says it still wants dialogue with the United States on limiting nuclear weapons, even as their last major arms control treaty, New START, expires without a replacement. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow regretted the end of the treaty but remained prepared to talk if Washington gave a constructive response to President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to keep key limits for one more year. The plan would see both sides continue to respect caps on deployed strategic warheads, missiles and launchers even though the full treaty can no longer be legally extended. New START, signed in 2010 by then presidents Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev, was the final accord in a series of US Russia nuclear arms agreements dating back over 50 years to the Cold War. Besides capping arsenals, it allowed on site inspections that experts say built trust […]

Kremlin dismisses claim Epstein was Russian spy

The Kremlin has mocked suggestions that late US financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein secretly worked as a Russian spy. Poland has said it will investigate Epstein’s alleged ties to Russian intelligence after the latest release of millions of documents from the so called Epstein files. Asked if Epstein was a Russian agent, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he was tempted to make many jokes about the idea but did not want to waste time on it. The newly released files show Epstein repeatedly spoke of wanting to meet President Vladimir Putin, although there is no evidence that such a meeting ever took place. Peskov has previously said the Kremlin never received any request from Epstein, who died in a US jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Putin’s name appears often in the latest batch […]

Russia says Iran uranium offer still open

Russia says its offer to take Iran’s enriched uranium abroad as part of a wider deal to ease United States concerns is still available. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters in Moscow that Russia had previously proposed exporting Iran’s enriched uranium reserves to Russian territory. She said this initiative remains on the table but that it is for Iran to decide whether to accept it. Zakharova stressed that only Iran has the right to decide what to do with its uranium stockpile. She added that Tehran alone can choose whether to send the material abroad and, if so, to which country. The proposal is part of broader diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme and address Washington’s concerns about the level and volume of uranium enrichment. No decision by Iran on the renewed offer has been announced.

Russia batters Ukraine’s power grid with drones and missiles ahead of peace talks

Russia has launched one of its heaviest winter barrages on Ukraine’s energy system, firing around 450 drones and more than 70 missiles across eight regions and knocking out heating for hundreds of thousands of people in sub‑zero temperatures. The overnight strikes hit Kyiv and Kharkiv particularly hard, damaging power and heating infrastructure as well as several apartment blocks, a kindergarten building and other civilian sites. In the capital, authorities said about 1,170 apartment buildings were left without heating, while an air raid alert lasted more than five hours. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said facilities that heat water for homes were among the targets, leaving “hundreds of thousands of families, including children” without warmth as temperatures plunged to around minus 20 to minus 25 degrees Celsius. In Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that over 800 buildings lost heat after water had […]

Moscow Signals Possible Military Countermeasures Speaking to reporters at the Russian embassy in China, Ryabkov said any US military deployment in Greenland would trigger a direct response from Russia. His remarks were reported by Russia’s state news agency TASS. “If the Americans decide to move weapons systems into the region or deploy elements of their Golden Dome concept in Greenland, it would require military and technical compensatory measures, and our specialists will be ready to take them,” Ryabkov said.
