UN links El-Fasher siege to genocide in Sudan

A United Nations fact-finding mission has concluded that atrocities committed during the siege and capture of El-Fasher in western Sudan point to acts of genocide. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized the city, located in the Darfur region, at the end of October after an 18-month blockade. The takeover marked one of the deadliest episodes in Sudan’s nearly three-year civil war and provoked strong international condemnation. According to investigators mandated by the UN Human Rights Council, evidence gathered during the inquiry — including prolonged siege tactics, starvation, denial of humanitarian aid, mass killings, sexual violence, torture and enforced disappearances — indicates intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Zaghawa and Fur communities in El-Fasher. Mona Rishmawi, a member of the mission, said the pattern of violations leaves “only one reasonable inference” regarding genocidal intent. The report identifies […]

RSF Israel killed most journalists worldwide in 2025

Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders says Israeli forces killed the highest number of journalists in the world for the third year in a row, mainly in the Gaza Strip. In its annual report, RSF found that 29 Palestinian journalists were killed by Israeli forces in Gaza over the past 12 months, accounting for about 43 percent of the 67 journalists killed globally. RSF described Israel as “the worst enemy of journalists,” saying the deaths were linked to military operations and not to stray bullets or accidental fire. The group stressed that many of the journalists were clearly identified as media workers and were killed while covering bombardments, displacement and humanitarian crises in Gaza. The report highlighted an August 25 “double tap” airstrike on a hospital in southern Gaza as the deadliest single incident. That attack killed five journalists, including two […]

Sudan Conflict: US Calls for End to Weapons Supply to RSF Over Atrocities

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has demanded urgent international action to cut off weapons supplies to Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), following reports of systematic atrocities, including murder, rape, and mass killings in el-Fasher, Darfur. Speaking at the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting, Rubio condemned RSF’s actions as genocidal, targeting non-Arab populations and committing widespread sexual violence against women and children. Sudan’s regular army accuses the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of arming the RSF via African intermediaries—a charge the UAE denies. The RSF, which now controls all major cities in Darfur after an 18-month siege of el-Fasher, relies on foreign-supplied weapons, with documented arms traced to Serbia, Russia, China, Turkey, Yemen, and the UAE. Satellite and field evidence show massacres and atrocities, and analysts warn that over 150,000 have died since the 2023 civil war began, with about 12 […]

UN Warns of Rising Violence Against Women and Girls in Sudan

The United Nations agency for women, UN Women, has raised alarm over the growing violence against women, girls, and civilians in and around El Fasher, North Darfur, Sudan. In a statement, the agency described the situation as catastrophic, noting that women and girls have faced siege, bombardment, and starvation for more than 500 days. Reports indicate that about 300,000 women and girls—half of the 575,000 people trapped in the city—are surviving on animal feed and leaves amid severe hunger and insecurity. UN Women said the recent takeover of El Fasher by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) marked a shift from siege to mass atrocities. The group cited reports of killings, rape, gang rape, sexual slavery, forced marriage, and abductions of women and girls. Medical networks, including the Sudan Doctors Union, have reported that over 2,000 civilians, many of them women […]

Sudan’s el-Fasher falls to RSF as fighter recounts killings and desperate escape

For 550 days, Abubakr Ahmed risked his life defending el-Fasher, the last major army stronghold in Sudan’s Darfur region, from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). As a member of the “popular resistance” — a local group backing the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) — he fought to keep the city from falling. That battle ended on October 26, when el-Fasher finally fell to the RSF after months of siege and relentless fighting. According to SAF leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the army’s surrender was meant to prevent a large-scale massacre, allowing troops to retreat safely. But the withdrawal left about 250,000 trapped civilians at the mercy of RSF fighters. Ahmed, 29, said he barely made it out alive. During the final hours of combat, a rocket-propelled grenade exploded near a car close to him, spraying shrapnel into his abdomen. “I was lucky […]
