Team Nigeria Targets Medals as World Athletics Championships Kick Off
Nigeria is set for medal glory as the 20th World Athletics Championships begin this Saturday in Tokyo, Japan. The nation’s charge will be led by discus thrower Obiageri Pamela Amaechi, who is aiming to become the first Nigerian woman to reach a World Championships final. Amaechi, 26, arrives in Tokyo in top form after a personal best throw of 64.80m in Ramona, Oklahoma. She will compete in the first qualifying group against Commonwealth Games champion Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons. Nigeria is also banking on star hurdler Tobi Amusan, a former world champion in the 100m hurdles, and Nathaniel Ezekiel, Africa’s top 400m hurdler.
