Francis Adenyo Calls for Responsible and Sustainable Mining Practices in Ghana

A respected voice in Ghana’s small-scale mining sector, Francis Adenyo, has called on miners to adopt responsible and environmentally friendly mining practices to safeguard the future of the industry. He emphasized that miners should make land reclamation a central part of their operations and actively monitor nearby mining sites to prevent environmental degradation. According to Mr. Adenyo, these actions are essential for reducing the environmental impact of mining while promoting sustainable development within mining communities. Reacting to proposals for a national state of emergency to tackle illegal mining, he disagreed with the idea, describing it as counterproductive. Ghana miners launch taskforce to fight illegal mining

The National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association, Ghana (NCSSMAG), has inaugurated an Anti-Galamsey Taskforce to intensify the fight against illegal mining on rivers and streams nationwide. The taskforce is mandated to monitor members’ operations, enforce compliance, and promote responsible mining practices. To enhance operations, NCSSMAG has deployed taskforces across major mining areas and procured a mini speedboat to patrol water bodies. The initiative supports the government’s Blue Water Guards program under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, which aims to safeguard Ghana’s rivers from destructive mining practices. At the launch, NCSSMAG President Michael Kwadwo Peprah issued a strong warning to illegal miners. “Our message is clear: all illegal mining operations on water bodies must cease immediately. The taskforce will not compromise in protecting our rivers for […]

Gold Board CEO denies buying galamsey gold, pushes reforms

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has rejected claims that the newly established institution is encouraging illegal mining by purchasing galamsey gold. “To create the impression that nobody was buying galamsey gold and all of a sudden GoldBod is now giving it a market is clearly wrong,” he said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show during a discussion on the government’s fight against illegal mining. Mr. Gyamfi explained that GoldBod does not buy gold directly. Instead, licensed private buyers—based mainly in district and regional capitals—purchase gold brought to them. These buyers, he noted, have no technology to verify whether the gold was mined legally or illegally, a challenge that has existed since colonial times. “It is this five-month-old corporation called Gold Board that has now been given the mandate to find a solution to that […]
