Five Tinubu ambassadorial nominees under scrutiny over past controversies

As the Senate begins screening President Bola Tinubu’s 65 ambassadorial nominees, at least five candidates are drawing intense scrutiny over past corruption probes, audit reports and inflammatory public statements, raising questions about their suitability to represent Nigeria abroad. Opposition parties, civil society groups and critics accuse the President of using key diplomatic postings to reward loyalists and controversial figures, particularly faulting the inclusion of former INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu and several politically exposed nominees. Among those flagged is ex National Intelligence Agency Director General Ayodele Oke, who was previously linked to the 2017 Ikoyi cash haul and faced money laundering charges over $43m, £27,800 and N23.8m recovered from a Lagos apartment, as well as a withdrawn EFCC case over $289m allegedly taken from NNPC accounts for “covert operations”. Another is retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas, former Sole Administrator of […]

Dangote to Nigerian elites: Skip Rolls Royce, invest in industries

Dangote Group Chairman, Aliko Dangote, has urged wealthy Nigerians to divert money spent on luxury items like Rolls Royce cars and private jets into building industries that create jobs and drive economic growth. Speaking after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, he lamented a culture of conspicuous consumption and recalled that, in earlier years, even presidents used modest official cars, which discouraged elites from outspending the state on luxury. He said anyone who can afford a Rolls Royce should instead establish factories in their communities or anywhere in Nigeria where investment is needed, arguing that many of the private jets crowding local airports could have been productive industrial assets. Dangote stressed that Nigeria’s development hinges on strong local investment in manufacturing and agriculture, backed by a solid banking system, and warned that rapid population growth of […]

Security emergency: Army freezes retirement of officers

The Nigerian Army has temporarily suspended statutory and voluntary retirements for selected categories of officers following the nationwide security emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu. The move comes after over 600 mass abduction cases were recorded in November alone, including the kidnapping of more than 300 students in Niger State, 38 worshippers in Kwara and 25 students in Kebbi, prompting the President to order expanded recruitment and large scale deployments. In an internal memo dated December 3 and signed by Maj Gen E. I. Okoro on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, the Army said the freeze is meant to retain manpower, experience and operational capacity as the Armed Forces expand under the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service Officers 2024, which allows service extensions in the interest of the military. The suspension applies to officers who have failed […]

Report: Why ex defence minister Badaru really resigned

Fresh details have emerged suggesting that former Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, was pressured to resign not only over health concerns but also because of a long running rift with Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and mounting criticism of his handling of insecurity. Badaru, who was appointed defence minister in August 2023 after serving two terms as Jigawa State governor, formally resigned on Monday after about two years in office, with the Presidency announcing that he stepped down due to “poor health”, while President Bola Tinubu immediately swore in former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (retd.), as his replacement. However, multiple senior defence ministry and military sources told Saturday Punch that a “frosty relationship” between Badaru and Matawalle had quietly destabilised parts of the ministry’s work for months, even though both men maintained a cordial […]
