UK justice minister to unveil major court reforms
UK Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood is set to announce a sweeping package of court and sentencing reforms aimed at tackling crime and easing pressure on Britain’s overcrowded prisons. The plan will tighten early release rules for serious offenders, reduce the scope for automatic release, and expand the use of longer sentences for repeat and dangerous criminals. At the same time, the reforms will encourage alternatives to custody for low‑level, non‑violent offenders, including community sentences and rehabilitation programmes, in a bid to reduce reoffending and free up prison space for high‑risk inmates. The proposals are also expected to include measures to speed up court processes, cut case backlogs, and make greater use of technology such as remote hearings to improve efficiency across the justice system.
