Presidency: Amaechi misled Nigerians on new tax law

The Presidency has accused former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi of misleading Nigerians with false claims about a new tax law that allegedly allows automatic deductions from bank accounts. In a statement, presidential aide Bayo Onanuga said Amaechi’s comments about “Tax Act No 25” and post 2027 enforcement were untrue and designed to create fear. Amaechi had claimed in a viral video that if the ruling All Progressives Congress remains in power after the 2027 elections, a tax policy would activate automatic debits on bank transfers and balances. He questioned why the law was not already in force, suggesting it was being delayed to avoid public backlash before the next polls. Onanuga dismissed these statements as “egregious lies”, insisting there is no provision in Nigeria’s new tax framework that authorises such automatic debits from citizens’ bank accounts. He alleged that […]

FG insists it did not alter new tax laws

The Federal Government has denied allegations that it secretly altered provisions of the newly signed tax reform laws before they were published in the official gazette. The Presidency said the laws now in force reflect what President Bola Tinubu signed and that any claims of changes made outside due process are unfounded. Presidential officials stressed that neither the President nor any authorised aide instructed anyone to tamper with the content of the tax bills passed by the National Assembly. They maintained that the executive respected the outcome of legislative debates and followed the standard procedure from passage to presidential assent and gazetting. Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, urged critics to allow the House of Representatives ad hoc committee to complete its investigation into the alleged discrepancies. He said any genuine errors or inconsistencies […]

Presidency explains rise in 2026 budget to N58trn

The Presidency says the proposed 2026 federal budget of N58.18 trillion is aimed at consolidating reforms, boosting growth and tackling security and social challenges, not just expanding spending for its own sake. The aggregate expenditure is about six per cent higher than the 2025 estimate of N49.7 trillion, reflecting what officials describe as a more ambitious but targeted fiscal plan. According to presidential officials, the increase is driven mainly by higher allocations to defence, internal security and law enforcement in response to persistent insurgency, banditry and other threats. The 2026 plan earmarks about N5.41 trillion for security related spending, making it one of the largest single components of the budget. The budget also scales up capital investment in infrastructure, including roads, rail, power and public assets needed to support private sector led growth. Government argues that sustained infrastructure funding is […]

Presidency rejects claim of secret tax law changes

The Presidency has rejected allegations that it secretly altered provisions of Nigeria’s new tax reform laws, insisting that no changes were made outside the proper legal and legislative process. The denial comes as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, opposition parties and several civil society groups demand a halt to implementation and a thorough investigation. President Bola Tinubu signed four tax reform bills into law, which together form what the government calls the most far reaching overhaul of Nigeria’s tax system in decades. The new framework, anchored on the Nigeria Revenue Service, includes the Nigeria Tax Act, the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Act and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Act. According to the Federal Government, the reforms aim to simplify compliance, broaden the tax base, remove overlapping taxes and […]

The war, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has attracted foreign fighters from around the world, including several from African nations. According to the presidency, the South Africans were “lured to join mercenary forces involved in the Ukraine-Russia war under the pretext of lucrative employment contracts.” It did not specify which side they were fighting for. President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered an investigation into how South African citizens were recruited to fight in the conflict. The government reminded citizens that it […]

The Presidency has denied reports claiming that President Bola Tinubu is set to travel to the United States on Tuesday for a meeting with US Vice President J.D. Vance. In a statement shared on Monday via his official X handle, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, described the report as false and misleading. Ajayi clarified that if President Tinubu were to visit the White House, his meeting would be with US President Donald Trump, not the Vice President. He stated, “There’s a Sahara Reporters story that President Tinubu is going to the U.S. on Tuesday to see U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. That story is not true. I can see that the fake news by Sahara has become the basis for some uninformed commentaries since yesterday. If President Tinubu is going to the […]
