Tanzania: Gunfire and Deaths Reported as Protests Erupt After Disputed Election
Gunfire echoed across parts of Dar-es-Salaam on Thursday as Tanzanian police clashed with protesters following a highly contested presidential election. Amnesty International confirmed the deaths of at least two people — a civilian and a police officer — amid growing unrest in the country’s largest city. In the Mbagala, Gongo la Mboto, and Kiluvya neighborhoods, demonstrators defied a government-imposed curfew, burning polling stations and chanting against what they called a rigged election. Tear gas and live rounds were reportedly fired to disperse the crowds.
