UNICEF Urges Massive Investment in Digital Skills as Youth Population Surges

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called for urgent, large-scale investment in digital skills to prepare Nigeria’s rapidly expanding youth population for the jobs of the future. Speaking at a media dialogue in Lagos, UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office, Celine Lafoucriere, warned that failure to act now could deepen inequality and undermine Nigeria’s development. By 2030, Nigeria will be home to an estimated 126 million children, making it one of the world’s youngest nations. Over 28 million children are already out of school, and 15% of Nigerian girls aged 15–24 are neither in school, employment, nor training. This digital gap, driven by poor infrastructure and limited device access, is a critical obstacle.
