Actor Ijebu urges police action over King Mitchy suicide attempt drama

Nollywood actor Tayo Amokade, popularly known as Ijebu, has called on the police to take action against content creator King Mitchy over her livestreamed suicide attempt. King Mitchy, whose real name is Mukoro Mitchelle, was seen on a TikTok and Instagram live session drinking a household cleaning product in what appeared to be an attempt to take her own life amid an ongoing feud with activist VeryDarkMan. In a video posted on Instagram, Ijebu condemned the act and warned that such content could negatively influence teenagers and young social media users who look up to influencers. He noted that the product she drank is commonly used to clean toilets and clothes and said it was dangerous to turn it into a prop for dramatic online content about depression and suicide. The actor appealed to the police and cybercrime units to […]

Ofcom probes X over Grok’s sexualised images

Ofcom has opened a formal probe into X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, amid concerns that its artificial intelligence chatbot Grok is being used to generate and distribute sexualised and illegal images. The UK communications regulator said it had received “deeply troubling reports” that Grok was being used to create images showing people undressed without their consent, as well as sexualised images involving children. Such material is illegal under UK law. According to the regulator, if X is found to have breached its legal obligations, it could face a fine of up to £18 million or 10% of its global annual turnover, whichever is higher. Ofcom also has the power to ask a court to order UK internet providers to block access to X if the company fails to comply. The BBC has contacted X for a […]

UK criticises X over paid Grok image edits

The UK government has sharply criticised Elon Musk’s social media platform X for restricting Grok AI image-editing tools to paying users, saying the move shows a lack of respect for victims of misogyny and sexual violence. Downing Street said the decision effectively turns a tool that has been used to create illegal and abusive images into a paid service, rather than addressing the harm it has caused. The comments follow widespread anger after Grok was found to be digitally altering photos of people, often women, by removing their clothing without consent. Government officials noted that while the feature is now blocked for free users on X, it remains available through Grok’s separate app and website. The prime minister’s spokesperson said the change proved the company could act quickly when it chose to, but insisted stronger action was still required. Sir […]

Waje urges male influencers to promote safer online culture

Award winning Nigerian singer and humanitarian Waje has used the 6th Nigerian Governors’ Spouses Forum Conference in Abuja to call for a safer and more responsible online culture, especially from male influencers and content creators. The high level conference brought together governors’ wives, policymakers, development partners and social advocates to discuss women’s empowerment, healthcare, education, youth development and social welfare. Speaking on the role of societal influencers in shaping culture, Waje said that beyond policies and programmes, the everyday attitudes people display online and offline play a major role in determining the kind of society that emerges. She noted that male influencers often underestimate their impact, stressing that what they normalise through jokes, language and the behaviour they tolerate in their comment sections can either reinforce harm or promote respect, and that silence can sometimes be read as endorsement. Waje […]

EU Demands Snapchat, YouTube Explain Child Safety Steps

The European Union has formally demanded that tech giants Snapchat and YouTube explain the measures they are taking to protect children from online harm. The request for information is part of an investigative action under the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA). The European Commission is specifically asking Snapchat how it prevents children under 13 from accessing the platform and how it stops the sale of drugs and vapes through the app. YouTube has been asked to provide details on its content recommendation system following reports of harmful content being disseminated to minors. The commission also sent requests to Apple and Google's app stores regarding their measures to prevent children from downloading harmful apps. This move comes as several EU member states explore the possibility of restricting minors' access to social media at a bloc-wide level, inspired by similar bans in […]
