FCT poll: Wike free to back any candidate he wants – APC

The All Progressives Congress has defended Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike’s decision to publicly back its candidates in the FCT Area Council elections, saying he has a constitutional right to support any candidate of his choice. The party dismissed opposition criticism of Wike’s role as misplaced and politically motivated. APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said on a television programme that Wike, a former Rivers State governor elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, remains a Nigerian citizen whose freedom of association and expression is guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution. He argued that nothing in the law stops the minister from campaigning for candidates in any party. Morka’s comments followed outrage in the PDP after two of its chairmanship candidates in Bwari and Abuja Municipal Area Council stepped down and endorsed APC rivals allegedly after […]

Wike to critics: your successors will also betray you

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has warned political office holders who back acts of betrayal that their own successors will eventually turn against them. Speaking at the inauguration of the Rivers State Renewed Hope Ambassadors headquarters in Port Harcourt, Wike said any senator, representative, minister or governor who supports betrayal should expect to face the same treatment in future. He noted that second term governors trying to impose successors while backing treachery would “never survive it,” adding that such problems usually start immediately after the new governor is sworn in. Wike, who remains in a bitter rift with his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, restated his commitment and that of his allies to President Bola Tinubu’s re election bid in 2027. He said Rivers people do not need the sitting governor to mobilise support for Tinubu and that the state […]

The Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers has set up a nine member committee to mediate the prolonged political rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Why I won’t defend FG’s charge against me – Nnamdi Kanu

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has announced that he will no longer defend the seven-count terrorism-related charge brought against him by the Federal Government, describing the case as “invalid and unlawful.” At the resumed hearing before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, Kanu, who previously chose to represent himself after disengaging his legal team, told the court that he found no valid charge in the case file that warranted a defence. Kanu said, “Having reviewed the entire case, I discovered there is no valid charge to defend. Since I am being subjected to an unlawful trial, I see no reason to defend myself or call witnesses.” Following this declaration, the IPOB leader withdrew his earlier request for the court to summon several high-profile individuals as witnesses, including Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo […]

UNYF Urges INEC Chair to Remove Barriers to PVC Collection

The Unified Nigeria Youth Forum (UNYF) has urged the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, to prioritise accessibility, transparency, and accountability in managing Nigeria’s electoral process. In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Forum’s National President, Comrade Toriah Olajide Filani, said the credibility of future elections depends largely on how inclusive and accessible voter registration and Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection become under the new leadership. Filani expressed concern that millions of eligible Nigerians remain unable to obtain their PVCs due to administrative bottlenecks and limited access to registration centres, especially in rural areas. “Despite the introduction of digital systems, many citizens lack internet access or the infrastructure to benefit,” he said. “In Lagos, for example, people queue as early as 2:00 a.m. just to register, yet many still leave […]

Wike Condemns Police, Vows Law After Demolishing Illegal Estate

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has strongly criticized the Nigerian Police Force for defying urban planning laws, leading to the demolition of its own multi-million naira housing estate. The illegal estate, located in the Gudu district of Abuja, was built directly under high-tension power lines and on land reserved for a future bridge. The FCT Administration demolished the nearly-completed project on Thursday after the police developers ignored multiple warnings and continued construction without approval. During a visit to the site, a visibly concerned Wike described the situation as "unfortunate" and a clear public safety risk. He emphasized that no institution is above the law. "The development control said no. There’s no way they would grant approval... They asked them to stop, they refused to stop," Wike stated. He confirmed that police officers had arrested FCT […]

Taskforce Halts Building, Demolishes Illegal Structures at Abuja Estate

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Ministerial Task Force has stopped ongoing construction at the disputed River Park Estate in Lugbe, Abuja, arresting workers who allegedly violated a subsisting Abuja High Court order. The court had earlier directed parties to maintain the status quo pending resolution of ownership and development rights within the estate. On Wednesday, officials of the task force, backed by security agencies, moved into the estate to enforce compliance. Several workers found on site were taken into custody for disregarding the stop-work order. In addition, the FCT Administration demolished over 30 illegal substructures, citing breaches of planning regulations. Authorities said the affected developers had continued work despite the withdrawal of their lease agreements and a ministerial recommendation that undeveloped plots revert to the government. The enforcement follows the report of an ad-hoc committee set up on August 8, […]

Tinubu Urged to Sack Underperforming Ministers — Nataro

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Kebbi State governorship candidate, Mallam Salihu Isa Nataro, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reshuffle his cabinet by removing underperforming ministers ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, Nataro, a public finance expert and reform advocate, said while the President’s economic policies were beginning to yield results, a radical cabinet overhaul was necessary to strengthen the Renewed Hope Agenda. He urged Tinubu not to retain any minister whose presence could undermine public confidence in the administration. Referring to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, he advised that the President consider redeploying him if security and public perception indicated risks to the government’s image. “The President has recorded tremendous achievements alone, without adequate complementary helping hands from his cabinet, where about 85 per cent […]
