OPL 245 deal to boost Nigeria’s oil output by 150,000 barrels daily

The Federal Government says resolving the long running dispute over Oil Prospecting Licence 245 will unlock new deepwater investment and raise Nigeria’s oil production by about 150,000 barrels per day when fully developed. The agreement, overseen by President Bola Tinubu and signed in Abuja, brings to an end more than 15 years of legal and commercial battles involving ENI, Nigerian Agip Exploration and other parties over ownership and terms of the block. Under the new structure, the controversial OPL 245 oilfield has been split into four separate assets to be operated by ENI and Shell, clearing a major obstacle that had stalled one of Nigeria’s largest untapped deepwater reserves. Officials say the settlement restores clarity and stability to the block, removes a prominent legacy risk in the upstream sector and sends a signal to investors that Nigeria is serious about […]

Dangote refinery row forces regulators to resign

The Nigerian oil and gas industry has been thrown into uncertainty following the resignation of the chief executives of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, Engr Gbenga Komolafe, and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, Engr Farouk Ahmed. Both NUPRC and NMDPRA are responsible for enforcing petroleum laws, regulations and guidelines in the upstream and downstream sectors. Komolafe and Ahmed were appointed in September 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari after the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA, came into force and had been reporting directly to President Bola Tinubu, who is also the Petroleum Minister, until their resignations. Farouk Ahmed’s exit follows his recent clash with industrialist Aliko Dangote, who petitioned the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, over alleged misconduct. Dangote accused the NMDPRA leadership of economic sabotage, claiming that its policies were […]

Nigeria’s oil production to rise, says NUPRC

The Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Gbenga Komolafe, has expressed optimism that Nigeria’s crude oil production will soon receive a significant boost following the completion of a new offshore production facility. Komolafe made this known in a statement issued on Thursday by the Commission’s Head of Media and Strategic Communications, Eniola Akinkuotu, after an official visit to Dubai Drydocks World in the United Arab Emirates. The visit was part of the Commission’s regulatory oversight to assess the EMEM Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel’s readiness for deployment to Nigerian waters. According to the statement, the EMEM FPSO is being converted for Oriental Energy Resources Limited and will be deployed to the Okwok Field, operated by Oriental Okwok Limited, offshore Nigeria. During a four-hour inspection, the NUPRC boss examined critical facilities, including the Oil and […]

Nigerian Oil Regulator Rejects New Decommissioning Commission

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has officially opposed a bill to create a new agency for decommissioning oil and gas facilities. The bill, which proposes the National Commission for Decommissioning of Oil and Gas Installations (NC-DOGI), was debated at a public hearing in Abuja. The NUPRC argued that the new commission is unnecessary and would duplicate existing efforts. The House Committee Chairman, Rep. Ado Doguwa, acknowledged that decommissioning old oil facilities is a major challenge for Nigeria. He stated that these abandoned sites have serious environmental, economic, and social impacts on host communities. However, the NUPRC responded that the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) of 2021 already gives it and another agency, the Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the full responsibility for decommissioning. In a submitted memo, the NUPRC stated that creating a new body would go […]

Nigeria supplies 67.6m barrels of crude to local refineries

The Federal Government says 67,657,559 barrels of crude oil were supplied to Nigerian refineries between January and August 2025. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) confirmed the figure, noting that deliveries went to both modular and state-owned refineries such as Waltersmith, Aradel Energy, and Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) facilities. Eniola Akinkuotu, Head of Media and Strategic Communications at NUPRC, explained that the supplies were made under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 and the Domestic Crude Supply Obligation (DCSO) policy, which requires producers to reserve a portion of crude for local processors before export. Despite this allocation, refiners received far less than they requested. Industry data shows local plants demanded 123.5 million barrels for the first half of 2025, but only 67.6 million barrels were delivered over eight months—about 45% less than required. Earlier projections suggested that […]

Nigeria’s oil production has risen to its highest level in six months, averaging 1.71 million barrels per day (bpd) in July 2025, according to new data from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). The Commission announced the figures on Thursday via its official X account, revealing that the total production included 1.507 million bpd of crude oil and 204,864 bpd of condensates. This represents an increase from 1.69 million bpd recorded in June 2025 and a significant improvement compared to 1.56 million bpd in July 2024 — a 9.9% year-on-year growth. NUPRC attributed the steady rise to enhanced security measures and improved operational efficiency across the upstream sector. “Even though Nigeria’s oil production has hit a six-month high with over 1.7 million barrels being produced daily, we at the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) are still exploring ways […]
