Will more defence funds make Nigeria safer

Nigeria has spent about 32.88 trillion naira on defence in the last 15 years, roughly 12.5 percent of total national budgets of 262.834 trillion naira in that period, yet insecurity remains widespread across the country . Despite these rising allocations, many communities still face insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, communal clashes and oil related violence, raising doubts about whether more money alone can make Nigerians safer . Security trackers estimate that over 100,000 people have been killed in violent incidents since 2012, with thousands abducted and about 3.726 million citizens displaced and living in roughly 3,900 camps nationwide . The trend has continued into 2026, with at least 1,091 deaths recorded from violent attacks in just the first 41 days of the year, underscoring the scale of Nigeria’s security crisis despite years of increased defence spending . Against this backdrop, the National […]

Police declare VIP escorts illegal, order arrest of erring officers

The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the arrest of any police officer found providing private escort or guard services to VIPs, declaring such duties illegal under a new nationwide directive. The order, issued through a confidential wireless message signed by the Inspector General of Police, directs all state commands and specialised units to immediately enforce the ban on unauthorised VIP security details. According to the directive, any officer caught escorting a VIP outside officially approved assignments will be arrested on the spot, while supervising officers who fail to ensure compliance will face disciplinary action. The memo limits enforcement to designated units such as the Compol X-Squad and the IGP Monitoring Unit, and stresses strict monitoring and reporting across all police formations nationwide. Police authorities said the move follows a presidential directive to withdraw police personnel from VIP protection so that […]

VIPs rush NSCDC, private guards as police escorts are withdrawn

There has been a surge in demand for the services of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigerian Correctional Service and private security firms after President Bola Tinubu ordered the withdrawal of police escorts from VIPs. The directive, aimed at boosting police presence in communities, has already seen Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun recall more than 11,500 escort officers nationwide. Findings across states show many affected politicians and high‑profile figures are now making frantic moves to secure alternative armed protection. Senior NSCDC officers in Abuja and Enugu confirmed they have been inundated with calls and formal applications from VIPs requesting personnel for home and personal security, even as the corps struggles with limited manpower and multiple national assignments. Private security companies are also reporting a spike in enquiries but say they lack enough trained guards to meet sudden demand. Withdrawal of Escorts: Fear Grips VIPs as Police Plan Modalities

Fear has spread among Nigeria's VIPs following President Bola Tinubu’s order for the withdrawal of police escort services. The move, publicized by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, tasks the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) with VIP protection, freeing police for their core public safety duties. The decision, aimed at confronting nationwide security threats, has prompted uncertainty among influential persons, who question the NSCDC’s ability to provide adequate security compared to battle-ready mobile police units. Police sources cite heavy incoming calls from anxious VIPs, with some likening this shift to “engaging boy scouts,” fearing lower training and operational readiness. Security experts highlight years of resource diversion, with many police officers reassigned from community patrol to escort convoys, leaving neighborhoods under-protected. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and civil society groups criticize the move as “political theatre” and not a strategic solution […]

NSCDC adopts sign language to boost security in Abuja

A tragic past incident has long highlighted the dangers faced by the hearing-impaired during security operations. Years ago, a deaf young man was shot because he could not hear security operatives ordering him to stop. That event exposed a critical communication gap between law enforcement and persons with disabilities. Today, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is taking steps to close that gap. For the first time in Nigeria’s security history, the Corps has trained and certified 250 officers in sign language. The initiative, launched by the FCT Command under the leadership of Commandant General Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, marks a historic move towards inclusive security. A new approach to security The training, conducted in partnership with Deaf-in-Tech and the Nigeria National Association of the Deaf, was themed “Advancing Public Safety through Inclusive Protection.” It is the first […]
