EU Launches Reality Show to Combat Youth Extremism in Northwest Nigeria

The European Union (EU) and Search for Common Ground have launched a new reality show in Northwest Nigeria to address youth vulnerability to violent extremism. The initiative, highlighted at an Abuja event, focuses on empowering young people in Katsina, Zamfara, and Sokoto by improving economic opportunities, conflict-resolution skills, and social inclusion. EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot described the project as “a timely intervention” that puts youths at the center of shaping peaceful communities. The programme is based on youth-led research and aims to provide mentorship, entrepreneurship training, and peacebuilding skills. At least 50% of participants will be women, and people with disabilities and both rural and urban participants will be included. A unique aspect is ‘The Hustle Reality Show,’ which will train youths in financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and community leadership through televised and digital content in English and Hausa. Troops Hit Terrorist Enclaves, Quell Farmer-Herder Clashes in Northwest, North-Central

Nigerian Army troops have destroyed terrorist enclaves and intervened effectively to quell farmer-herder clashes in multiple states including Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kogi, Kwara, Imo, and Benue. In Katsina, air and ground forces targeted hideouts in Faskari and Sabuwa, seizing motorcycles and recovering livestock. Quick military responses prevented violence escalation in Sokoto, where troops halted clashes in Talba, leading to one herder's death and four injured farmers. Kebbi faced separate confrontations; troops increased patrols after property destruction and casualties. Zamfara’s counter-terrorism units neutralized terrorists, recovered livestock, and secured the area. In Kogi and Kwara, troops acted on reports of extremism and abductions, conducting patrols and search-rescue missions. Additional operations rescued abducted victims in Benue, recovered equipment in Imo, and responded swiftly across theatres. Handovers of rescued victims and the deceased to police, plus recovery of weapons, underline ongoing collaborative security […]

In a statement released on Sunday, the group’s chairman, Abubakar Sani, accused Amnesty of presenting “inflated and unsubstantiated” data that could fuel division and unrest in the country. “We categorically challenge the numbers cited in this report, deeming them grossly inflated, misleading, and ultimately inflammatory,” Sani said. He urged Amnesty to reconsider its approach to reporting on Nigeria, noting that such figures undermine efforts to strengthen democracy and stability. Amnesty International had claimed in its recent report that hundreds of people were killed or displaced in violent attacks across Nigeria in the last year. However, the NDMG insisted that its field research across several communities in the Northwest painted a different picture. “Our findings starkly contrast with […]
