Power minister promises quick restoration of electricity supply

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has assured Nigerians that electricity supply will be rapidly restored after a sharp nationwide drop in power in recent days. He said the disruption is temporary and linked to a sudden shortfall in generation caused by damage to critical gas infrastructure. According to the minister, the decline followed an explosion on the Escravos–Lagos Gas Pipeline and acts of vandalism on other gas facilities feeding several major thermal power plants. These incidents cut gas supply, forcing many gas fired stations to reduce output and leading to reduced power on the national grid. Adelabu spoke after a meeting with key sector stakeholders, including the National Independent System Operator, Transmission Company of Nigeria, generation companies and distribution companies. He said repairs to the affected pipelines are nearing completion and that full operations are expected to resume within 24 […]

Court Restrains PENGASSAN From Cutting Gas Supply to Dangote Refinery Amid Nationwide Strike Threat

The National Industrial Court, Abuja, has restrained the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) from cutting crude and gas supply to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE. The interim order, delivered by Justice Emmanuel Subilim, followed an ex-parte application filed by the refinery’s lawyers, led by Ogwu Onoja (SAN). The court barred PENGASSAN, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) from halting supply or embarking on any action that could cripple refinery operations. Justice Subilim ruled that the balance of convenience was in favor of Dangote Refinery, warning that the planned strike would “irreparably damage” its operations and disrupt essential services to the Nigerian public. The matter was adjourned to October 13, with the interim order valid for […]

The delay comes at a critical time, as Nigeria seeks foreign loans to support its 2025 budget amid rising fiscal pressures and limited revenue sources. Oil Price Drop Puts Pressure on Deal Oil prices have fallen by about 20% , with Brent crude now trading around $65 per barrel , down from over $82 in January . This decline […]
