Dangote Refinery absorbs 20% of crude cost surge to stabilise fuel prices

Dangote Petroleum Refinery says it is currently absorbing about 20 percent of the recent crude oil cost escalation in order to reduce the impact of rising global prices on Nigerian fuel consumers. The company explained that the conflict in the Middle East and disruptions to global refining capacity have driven Brent crude prices up by roughly 26 percent, while Nigerian crude now trades at a premium of 3 to 6 dollars above the benchmark, with freight adding about 3.50 dollars per barrel. In response, the refinery implemented a 100 naira per litre increase in its ex depot price of petrol, representing about a 12 percent adjustment, but stressed that this is lower than the full rise in crude and logistics costs because it has chosen to absorb part of the escalation. Dangote Refinery said it receives around five cargoes of […]

Petrol prices stay high despite Dangote slash

Many filling stations across Nigeria have yet to reduce their pump prices despite Dangote Refinery’s cut in ex depot price, which should see petrol sell at about N739 or N740 per litre. Checks by reporters showed that several outlets still sell far above this level, with prices in some places close to N900 per litre. In Lagos and its outskirts, many MRS filling stations were found selling at around N850 per litre, about N110 higher than the price Dangote Group’s president, Aliko Dangote, said the company’s retail outlets would charge. At Alagbole on the Lagos Ogun border, petrol sold for N850, while MRS stations on Ekoro Road and in Abule Egba sold between N825 and N870 per litre. Other marketers in the area also maintained higher prices, with Bovas in Ojodu selling at N820 per litre and an NNPC station […]

Presidency Eyes NNPC Shake-Up As Oil Output Falters

The Nigerian presidency is considering major reforms at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) amid concerns over faltering oil production. Special Adviser on Energy, Olu Verheijen, announced at a petroleum conference in Lagos that Nigeria’s goal of producing 3 million barrels per day requires more than the current NNPC structure and output. NNPC Exploration & Production Limited currently produces only 220,000 barrels/day, less than 10% of national output, and struggles with the financial capacity to fund new drilling campaigns. Verheijen advocated for “performance-based stewardship” and suggested restructuring asset ownership to involve reputable operators with strong technical and financial capacity, instead of relying solely on NNPC. She outlined four pillars for revitalizing the energy sector: reserves, revenues, reliability, and responsibility. Nigeria has secured $8bn in new investment and targets another $20bn for expansion into gas, petrochemicals, and refining. NNPC Chairman […]

Petrol Price Nears ₩1,000/Litre as Marketers Plan Imports

The price of petrol is approaching ₩1,000 per litre in major Nigerian cities, prompting petroleum marketers to initiate plans for independent importation to stabilize the market. Marketers have blamed the price surge on supply constraints and production issues at the Dangote Refinery, which led private depot owners to significantly increase their ex-depot prices. This has forced retailers, including the NNPC, to adjust pump prices upwards. The National Publicity Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) confirmed that members of the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association (DAPPMAN) are finalizing arrangements to import petrol. He stated that increased competition from these imports is expected to drive prices down in the coming weeks. Analysts warn that the soaring fuel cost threatens to trigger a fresh wave of price shocks across transportation, food, and manufacturing sectors.
