Judge steps down from EFCC cases against Malami

Justice Obiora Egwuatu has withdrawn from two cases filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami. He said he was recusing himself for personal reasons and in the interest of justice. Egwuatu had only recently received the matters after they were reassigned to him by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho. He announced his withdrawal shortly after a civil forfeiture suit on 57 properties allegedly linked to Malami was called. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the cases were previously before Justice Emeka Nwite, who handled them as a vacation judge during the Christmas break. The files are expected to be sent back to the Chief Judge for reassignment to another judge.

Supreme Court ends Kudirat Abiola murder case against Al Mustapha

The Supreme Court has dismissed the case seeking to revive the murder trial of Major Hamza Al Mustapha over the killing of Kudirat Abiola, wife of the acclaimed winner of the 1993 presidential election. The apex court held that Lagos State had abandoned the matter after failing to take any steps since 2014. Kudirat Abiola was assassinated in Lagos on June 4, 1996, during nationwide protests against the annulment of her husband MKO Abiola’s election victory. Al Mustapha, then Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, was charged alongside Mohammed Abacha and Lateef Shofolahan on counts of conspiracy and murder. In January 2012, a Lagos High Court convicted the defendants and sentenced them to death by hanging. However, the Court of Appeal in July 2013 overturned the judgment, discharged and acquitted them, ruling that the […]

Appeal Court deploys 40 justices to clear Lagos backlog

The Court of Appeal has deployed 40 justices to Lagos for a special sitting aimed at speeding up the hearing of appeals in the state. About 360 cases have been listed before 16 panels set up for the exercise. President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban Mensem, who presided over Monday’s session, said the move is a deliberate effort to improve the efficiency of justice delivery. She noted that Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial centre, carries a heavy appeal workload that demands proactive intervention. She explained that the 16 panels are made up of 40 justices drawn from various divisions of the court across the country. They are expected to sit throughout the week in Lagos, including at the National Industrial Court. Justice Dongban Mensem said the deployment required sacrifice because some divisions were left with fewer justices to […]

Court fixes Jan 22 for Sowore’s trial over Tinubu tweet

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed January 22 for the start of the trial of Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore over alleged false claims against President Bola Tinubu. Justice Mohammed Umar set the date after Sowore pleaded not guilty to a two count amended charge filed by the Department of State Services. In the amended charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025 and filed on December 5, Sowore is listed as the only defendant. X Inc, formerly Twitter, and Meta, owner of Facebook, which were earlier joined as second and third defendants, were removed from the case at the request of the prosecution. The DSS alleges that on or about August 25 2025, Sowore used his X handle @YeleSowore to post a message accusing Tinubu of falsely claiming in Brazil that there was no more corruption under his government. Prosecutors say he […]

Court rejects Nnamdi Kanu’s bid to leave Sokoto prison

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected an application by IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu seeking to be moved from the Sokoto Correctional Centre to a custodial facility closer to Abuja. Kanu had asked to be transferred to Kuje Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory or Keffi Custodial Centre in Nasarawa State. He made the request through the Legal Aid Council in an ex parte application, arguing that a transfer would help him effectively pursue his appeal. In the alternative, he asked to be moved to any facility within the court’s jurisdiction, including Suleja or Keffi. Justice James Omotosho declined to grant the request on Monday, ruling that such an order could not be made without hearing from the Federal Government. The judge held that the government and other parties must be given the chance to respond before any […]
