82 Nigerian women on death row, rights group warns

Human rights group Hope Behind Bars Africa has revealed that 82 Nigerian women are currently on death row in correctional centres across the country, calling it one of the most overlooked gender based injustices in the criminal justice system. Executive Director Funke Adeoye disclosed the figure in Abuja at the presentation of a report titled “Beyond Her Sentence A Technical Analysis of Gender and Capital Punishment in Nigeria.”​ The study, supported by the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty and the French Development Agency, examines how women end up on death row and the systemic inequalities they face. Correctional service empowers Akwa Ibom inmates with starter packs

The Nigerian Correctional Service, Akwa Ibom Command, has equipped five inmates with business starter packs to support their reintegration into society and help them build sustainable livelihoods after release. The command’s Public Relations Officer, Richard Metong, announced the initiative in a statement issued on Friday in Uyo.​ Speaking during the presentation at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, the state Controller, Frank Okonkwo, reaffirmed that rehabilitation remains a core mandate under the NCoS Act, 2019. NCoS Partners Yakubu Gowon University on Inmate Rehabilitation

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has announced plans to collaborate with Yakubu Gowon University to expand education and vocational training opportunities for inmates. The partnership was discussed on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the FCT Controller of Corrections, Christopher Jen, to the university’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Adamu Matthew. In a statement issued on Wednesday by the NCoS spokesperson, Adamu Duza, Jen highlighted the need to engage inmates in meaningful learning and skill acquisition programs to aid their rehabilitation and reintegration. “We want to ensure that our inmates are kept busy and acquire skills that will enable us to sleep with our two eyes closed when they are discharged,” Jen said.
