Boko Haram has lasted longer than civil war Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says the Boko Haram insurgency has now lasted for about 15 years, making it longer than the Nigerian civil war. He described the prolonged conflict as a serious failure in addressing insecurity and development challenges in the country.​ Obasanjo spoke while comparing the three year civil war to the insurgency which began around 2009 and has continued despite several military operations. He said the situation shows that Nigeria has not tackled the root causes of extremism, including poverty, unemployment and poor governance.​ He also warned that long running conflicts weaken national unity and drain resources that should be used for education, health and infrastructure.
