Kano suspends doctors over scissors found in patient’s stomach

Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three medical doctors at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre after an investigation confirmed that surgical scissors were mistakenly left inside the stomach of a patient, leading to her death. The victim, identified as Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, had undergone surgery at the government‑owned facility in September 2025 and reportedly suffered persistent abdominal pains for months afterward. A fresh scan conducted days ago revealed that a pair of scissors had been forgotten in her abdomen during the initial operation, prompting plans for corrective surgery. Unfortunately, she died on Sunday while preparations were underway, sparking outrage from relatives and members of the public over alleged medical negligence at the centre. In a statement, the Board’s Executive Secretary, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, described the incident as clear medical negligence and announced the immediate suspension […]

FG unveils new rules for online pharmacy services

The Federal Government has moved to tighten control of online medicine sales with the launch of a National Electronic Pharmacy Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan. Officials say the policy is designed to regulate electronic pharmacy services, curb unsafe drug sales on digital platforms and expand access to quality assured medicines. Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, said the rise of digital platforms has transformed many sectors but left the pharmaceutical space fragmented, with limited oversight of online drug vendors. He explained that the new framework aims to modernise healthcare delivery so that Nigerians can get safe, affordable medicines regardless of where they live. According to Pate, the e pharmacy policy sets out a clear and enforceable framework for all electronic pharmacy activities in Nigeria. It establishes licensing and accreditation standards for digital pharmacy platforms, enables real […]

FG launches Safe Blood Project to expand access nationwide

The Federal Government has launched a new initiative to transform blood transfusion services across Nigeria, pledging that no citizen should lose their life due to the unavailability of safe blood. The programme, called “The Safe Blood Project,” is the country’s first national training scheme focused on transfusion safety. It was unveiled at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, and is coordinated by the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA). Nigeria has long struggled with inadequate blood supply, relying heavily on family replacement and paid donors, a practice that experts say contributes to avoidable deaths — especially among women during childbirth, children with severe anaemia, and accident victims. The initiative will: Train health workers in modern transfusion medicine. Strengthen laboratories for effective screening and storage. Institutionalise voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation. Serve as a hub for research and innovation to guide policy. Prof. […]

Optometry Mentors Group Marks 10 Years, Sets New Eye Care Agenda

The Family of Optometric Mentors (FOM) has celebrated its 10th anniversary with a renewed commitment to expand mentorship, clinical training, and innovation in Nigeria’s eye care sector. The milestone was marked at the group’s ninth Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Abuja, where leaders outlined a fresh vision for tackling preventable blindness and strengthening clinical competencies across the country. National Coordinator, Dr. Alwell Maduakolam, said FOM has grown from just five mentors in 2014 to a structured organisation with 25 state chapters, 100 trained mentors, and 50 aspiring mentors in training. Over the past decade, the network has trained more than 4,000 optometrists and nearly 1,000 students through workshops, mentorship programmes, and institutional outreach. “By raising the capacity of optometrists, especially at the primary eye care level, we are directly contributing to the fight against avoidable blindness,” Maduakolam noted, adding that […]

FG Urges Traditional Medicine Practitioners to Standardise Products

The Federal Government has called on traditional medicine practitioners to standardise their products and subject them to modern scientific scrutiny, stressing that this is the only way to dispel doubts about their safety and efficacy. Speaking in Abuja during the 2025 African Traditional Medicine Day, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Adekunle Salako, said investment in research and clinical studies is necessary to validate the quality of traditional remedies and integrate them into Nigeria’s health system. “Evidence is the bridge between belief and policy. It is what will allow traditional medicines to move from the periphery to the mainstream of healthcare delivery, not just in Nigeria, but also across the continent,” Salako said. He explained that many Nigerians, especially those in rural and underserved areas, still rely on herbal remedies, spiritual healing, and indigenous knowledge systems as their primary […]
