Kano assembly by elections peaceful but record low turnout

The Kano State House of Assembly by elections held on Saturday were largely peaceful but recorded very low voter turnout in many polling units. The exercise took place in Kano Municipal and Ungogo local government areas to fill two vacant seats in the state assembly. Observers and journalists reported that Independent National Electoral Commission officials arrived early with voting materials and set up at most polling stations. However, only a small number of voters turned up, leaving many polling units almost empty for several hours. Security agencies deployed personnel across the affected areas, and there were no major incidents of violence or disruption. Voters who spoke to reporters commended the orderly process but expressed surprise at the level of voter apathy. The by elections followed the death of two assembly members representing the constituencies late last year. INEC had earlier […]

Nigeria’s Mandatory Voting Bill Faces Backlash: Global Rights Slams Proposal as ‘Undemocratic

Nigeria’s Mandatory Voting Bill: A Flawed Fix for Voter Apathy? A controversial bill proposing compulsory voting for Nigerians—with penalties of ₦100,000 fines, six-month imprisonment, or both—has drawn sharp criticism from civil society group Global Rights, which labeled the move “undemocratic” and “misguided.” The bill, currently before the House of Representatives, seeks to amend the Electoral Act 2022 to enforce voter participation.
