Nigerians in Middle East send distress calls as FG halts pilgrimage

Escalating violence in the Middle East has disrupted Nigerian pilgrimage plans and triggered distress calls from citizens living and working in the region. The Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission has announced the immediate suspension of all pilgrimages to Israel, citing the worsening security situation and the state of emergency declared by Israeli authorities. Executive Secretary Bishop Stephen Adegbite said the decision covers both government organised and privately arranged trips until conditions improve. Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri Erewa, says Turkish officials were surprised that President Bola Tinubu’s brief stumble in Ankara became a major news topic in Nigeria. She noted that Turkish media largely highlighted the positive aspects of the trip. Opeyemi also pointed out that no mainstream Turkish television station reported the President’s accidental slip, calling […]

Students made up the largest group of asylum seekers at 40%, ahead of work visa holders (29%) and visitors (24%). The government has launched a direct messaging campaign reminding students to leave once their visas expire. A message sent to affected students warned that asylum claims without merit would be “swiftly and robustly refused” and overstayers risked deportation. UK universities hosted 732,285 overseas students in the […]
