ASUU Demands Halt on Creation of 9 New Universities, Threatens Strike
The Yola Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on the Federal Government to suspend the establishment of nine newly approved universities until existing institutions are adequately funded and equipped. Speaking at a press conference on Monday at Modibbo Adama University, Yola, Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Dani Mamman, said the move to expand the university system without addressing existing challenges amounts to a deliberate weakening of Nigeria’s higher education sector. Represented by Dr. Mbave Joshua, Chairman of ASUU at Taraba State University, Mamman argued that the Federal Government has continued to ignore the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, which prioritised revitalisation of current universities through sustainable funding.
