Fire Destroys NEDCo Warehouse in Tamale, Over 20 Transformers Lost

A massive fire engulfed the Central Warehouse of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) in Tamale on Sunday afternoon, reducing critical electrical equipment to ashes. The blaze, which broke out around 2 PM, destroyed over 20 transformers and an unknown number of insulators.Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) rushed to the scene with two fire tenders from the Tamale Metro and Tamale Teaching Hospital stations. These fires, often sparked by hunters in search of bushmeat, have destroyed numerous electricity poles, leading to prolonged power outages in rural communities. The Kpandai district has been particularly affected, with downed poles leaving residents in darkness for days.The destruction has far-reaching consequences, disrupting businesses, healthcare, and education while increasing unplanned maintenance costs for the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo). Public safety risks also rise as damaged wires hang dangerously close to the ground.NEDCo’s Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Alaasan Abaaba, highlighted the economic and social toll, urging Ghanaians to share responsibility in protecting infrastructure.
