Tinubu asks lawmakers to extend 2025 budget to March 2026

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked the National Assembly to extend the implementation of the 2025 budget from December 31, 2025 to March 31, 2026. He also wants approval to consolidate the capital components of the 2024 and 2025 budgets as part of wider fiscal reforms. Tinubu made the request in a letter dated December 18, which was read at Friday’s plenary by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen. He noted that the new letter replaces his earlier correspondence on the same subject dated December 16. In the letter, the President transmitted Appropriation (Repeal and Re enactment) Bills for 2024 and 2025 to the National Assembly. He explained that the bills seek to repeal the existing 2024 and 2025 Appropriation Acts and replace them with revised spending frameworks. For 2024, Tinubu proposed repealing the N35.06 trillion budget […]

Enugu Senator Okey Ezea Dies in UK, Senate Pays Tribute

Senator Okey Ezea, representing Enugu North Senatorial District on the Labour Party platform, has died in the UK while receiving medical treatment. Kano Group Storms National Assembly, Urges Senate to Confirm Ramat Abdullahi as NERC Chairman

A Kano-based advocacy group, Grassroots Initiative Concept, has called on the Senate to urgently confirm Ramat Abdullahi’s nomination as Executive Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The group praised Abdullahi’s record of integrity, competence, and public service, emphasizing his alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda. The open letter to President Tinubu and Senate leadership expressed concern over delays in Abdullahi’s confirmation, alleging vested interests aim to stall it. The group lauded Abdullahi’s decade-long experience in government and private sector and urged the Senate to “stand on the side of fairness, patriotism, and progress.” Confirming Abdullahi, they argued, would strengthen Nigeria’s electricity sector and set a precedent for institutional integrity. The group reaffirmed support for President Tinubu’s nomination and called on the Senate to prioritize justice and national interest in the energy sector.

Calls grow for referendum amid dispute over Constitution reform

A renewed push for a referendum in Nigeria’s Constitution has sparked nationwide debate among legal experts, civil society groups, and regional organisations. Many describe the current system as elite-driven and undemocratic, calling for a people-endorsed Constitution that reflects true national consensus. Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Wole Olanipekun, recently described the absence of a referendum clause in the 1999 Constitution as a major flaw. His remarks reignited public concern over how Nigeria’s constitutions have historically been imposed without popular ratification. Since independence, no Nigerian constitution has ever been approved through a national referendum. Under the current arrangement, amendments require the support of two-thirds of both chambers of the National Assembly and at least two-thirds of state Houses of Assembly. Critics argue that this legislative process excludes the citizens whose lives the laws govern. Groups such as Afenifere, Yoruba Ronu, PANDEF, and […]

Coalition faults push for Sharia law, cites breach of 1999 constitution

A coalition of civil rights and faith-based organisations has condemned renewed efforts to expand the implementation of Sharia law in Nigeria, describing it as a violation of the 1999 Constitution and a threat to national unity and human rights. The coalition, operating under the banner End Sharia Now, includes groups such as One Nation One Law, Global Network of Christian Faith and Truth, and Love a Muslim Ministry. In a statement signed by Benson Sunday on Wednesday, the coalition said attempts to institutionalise Sharia beyond personal faith practices contradict the Constitution’s secular foundation. Responding to comments from some Islamic scholars who argued that there was “no justification for opposing Sharia in Nigeria,” the coalition cited sections 10 and 42 of the 1999 Constitution, which prohibit the adoption of any state religion and guarantee equality of all citizens regardless of faith. Speaking at a joint retreat in Lagos, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, urged lawmakers to work towards transmitting the first set of amendments to State Houses of Assembly before the end of the year. The retreat is focused on a clause-by-clause review of a massive number of proposals. These include 69 amendment bills, 55 requests for new states, and 278 requests for the creation of new local governments. Senator Jibrin emphasized that the process, which involved two years of public consultations, must be approached with patriotism and a focus on the shared national interest, setting aside political or regional differences.

Police Ban Protests Near Aso Rock, Cite Court Order

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a strong warning, banning all protests around the Aso Rock Presidential Villa and other key government areas in Abuja. This directive is based on a recent order from a Federal High Court in Abuja. The court's ruling restrains any individuals or groups from staging protests in and around the Aso Rock Villa, the National Assembly Complex, the Force Headquarters, the Court of Appeal, and Eagle Square. The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the police will strictly enforce this court order. He advised all intending protesters and counter-protesters to avoid these restricted areas to prevent any confrontation or disturbance of public order. The police warned that anyone using protests as a cover to incite violence, vandalize property, or carry weapons will be arrested and prosecuted. This could include charges related to […]

Madagascar President Dissolves Parliament Amid Political Crisis

Madagascar’s embattled President Andry Rajoelina has issued a decree dissolving the National Assembly, in a last-ditch attempt to stave off a political collapse as pressure mounts for his resignation. The president, who has reportedly fled the country, announced the decree on social media on Tuesday — just hours before lawmakers were expected to hold an impeachment vote against him. The political climate remains tense, with sections of the military and police now backing mass protests demanding that Rajoelina step down. According to a statement released by the presidency on Facebook, the decree “shall enter into force immediately upon its publication by radio and/or television broadcast.” Rajoelina defended his action in a separate online post, calling it a move to “restore order within our nation and strengthen democracy.” However, opposition leader Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, who was leading the impeachment effort, dismissed the […]

Senator Natasha Returns to Senate After Six-Month Suspension

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has returned to the Nigerian Senate after serving a six-month suspension. The lawmaker, representing Kogi Central, was seen on the floor as the Senate resumed plenary on Tuesday.
