Hayli Gubbi Volcano Erupts in Ethiopia After 10,000 Years

A volcano in Ethiopia has erupted for the first known time in more than 10,000 years, sending massive columns of smoke and ash into the sky and disrupting air travel as far away as India. The Hayli Gubbi volcano, located in the Afar region in Ethiopia’s northeast, came alive on Sunday after millennia of inactivity. The eruption blanketed nearby villages in thick dust and created new challenges for farmers and livestock herders in the area. Local administrator Mohammed Seid told the Associated Press that no casualties have been reported, but the ashfall threatens grazing lands essential for the community’s survival.
