NAFDAC seals 18 warehouses over expired products in Niger

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has sealed 18 warehouses in Bida, Niger State, after discovering large quantities of expired food and beverage products. Officials estimate the value of the seized items at over 100 million naira. The warehouses, located around Ndazabo White House along Minna Road and behind Bida Modern Market, were shut following an intelligence led raid by NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement team. The agency said the facilities were being used to store expired goods that were already being repackaged for sale. Items recovered during the operation included expired non alcoholic beverages, dairy milk, candies, bottled water, pasta and other assorted products. Some of the products had allegedly been relabelled or repackaged to conceal their expired status before being returned to the market. NAFDAC disclosed that preliminary investigations linked the warehouses to a company […]

Labour warns of looming job losses over NAFDAC sachet alcohol ban

Food and beverage sector unions have warned the Federal Government that NAFDAC’s enforcement of the ban on sachet alcohol and small PET bottles could trigger massive job losses and factory shutdowns. They say the continued sealing of production lines and depots is already disrupting operations in breweries and distilleries across the country. Leaders of the Food, Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association and the National Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employees protested again at NAFDAC’s Lagos office, demanding that the agency obey the recent directive suspending the crackdown. They argue that with the national alcohol policy already signed, NAFDAC should have lifted restrictions instead of moving to close more factories. Union officials estimate that the policy could threaten hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs in manufacturing, logistics and retail. They also warn that wiping out regulated sachet […]

Workers protest at NAFDAC office over sachet alcohol ban

Workers in the food and beverage sector on Thursday staged a protest at the Lagos office of NAFDAC, demanding a halt to the enforcement of the sachet alcohol ban and the reopening of sealed factories and depots. The demonstrators, mostly from affected distilleries, accused the agency of ignoring earlier interventions said to have come from the SGF and the National Security Adviser. The protesters, under the Food, Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association, carried placards and chanted solidarity songs as they called for the release of products allegedly seized during recent enforcement operations. They warned that continued clampdowns were threatening jobs, deepening economic hardship and undermining the welfare of their members. Security presence around the Lagos office was increased, but there were no reports of violence and mediation efforts between the union and NAFDAC were ongoing. In a swift response, […]

FG stops NAFDAC from enforcing sachet alcohol ban

The Federal Government has ordered the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control to stop enforcing the ban on sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottle drinks. The directive followed concerns that continuing the crackdown could harm the economy and worsen security challenges in many communities. The order came through a joint intervention by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Office of the National Security Adviser. Both offices warned that sealing factories and warehouses, without a fully operational National Alcohol Policy, could fuel job losses, disrupt supply chains and threaten social stability. In a statement signed by Terrence Kuanum, Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the SGF, the government confirmed that the National Alcohol Policy has been signed by the Ministry of Health under President Bola Tinubu’s directive. However, NAFDAC was told […]

Group backs NAFDAC, urges strict enforcement of sachet alcohol ban

The Renevlyn Development Initiative has urged NAFDAC to stand firm on enforcing the ban on the production, distribution and sale of alcoholic drinks in sachets and containers of 200 millilitres and below. In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Philip Jakpor, the group said the call became necessary following rising opposition from sections of the alcohol and beverage industry after enforcement began on January 22. He noted that the current crackdown is the outcome of more than two years of engagements between NAFDAC and industry stakeholders. Jakpor recalled that the Association of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employers and the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria signed an agreement with the Federal Ministry of Health and NAFDAC in December 2018 to phase out alcohol in sachets and PET bottles below 200ml by January 31, 2024. The deadline was later extended […]

NAFDAC clarifies sachet alcohol ban, says no company shut

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has clarified that it has not shut down any alcohol producing company while enforcing the ban on alcoholic drinks in sachets and small containers below 200 millilitres. The agency said the enforcement, backed by a recent Senate resolution and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, is aimed at protecting public health, especially children, adolescents and young adults, from harmful alcohol use. NAFDAC Director General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, explained that the action targets only alcohol packaged in sachets and containers smaller than 200ml, not manufacturers themselves. “NAFDAC did not close down any company that makes alcohol. The agency only bans alcohol in sachets and small containers less than 200ml,” she said. She stressed that the policy is a public health intervention, not a punishment. “This ban is not punitive; […]

Sachet alcohol ban: activists protest at NAFDAC Lagos office

Consumer rights advocates on Monday stormed the Lagos office of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to protest the planned enforcement of a ban on sachet alcoholic beverages. The demonstration was organised by the Coalition for the Protection of Consumers’ Rights and led by Comrade Olufemi Lawson. Lawson criticised the proposed enforcement as economically insensitive and poorly timed, warning it could worsen unemployment and hardship. He argued that manufacturers, distributors and consumers would all be hit, and questioned the policy’s consistency given that many of the affected products were previously tested, registered and approved by NAFDAC. He insisted that underage drinking is an enforcement problem, not a product problem, noting that sachet drinks are clearly labelled “not for sale to persons under 18”. The coalition also disputed claims of excessively high alcohol content, saying licensed […]

NAFDAC joins world’s top drug regulators in historic ICH membership

NAFDAC has secured full membership of the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use, joining an elite circle of the world’s top drug regulatory authorities. The announcement was made at the ICH Assembly held in Singapore between November 18 and 19, 2025, and later published on the organisation’s website on November 26, marking Nigeria’s transition from observer to full member. Director General Prof Mojisola Adeyeye described the development as historic, saying it places Nigeria among global leaders committed to the highest standards of quality, safety and efficacy for medicines. She said the achievement will give Nigerians better access to high quality medical products and boost the competitiveness and credibility of Nigerian made medicines in local and international markets. NAFDAC began its journey toward ICH membership in late 2022, first applying for observer status and earning […]

FG Bans Production, Sale of Alcohol in Sachets, Small Bottles

The Federal Government has officially banned the production, sale, and distribution of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and bottles below 200ml, with full enforcement beginning January 1, 2026. NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye cited the move as essential to curb alcohol abuse, particularly among youth and commercial drivers. Over 1,000 personnel will be recruited for NAFDAC to enforce the ban. The decision follows Senate and Ministry of Health directives, targeting spirit drinks in sachets and small bottles, but not all alcoholic beverages. The ban aims to reduce addiction, domestic violence, accidents, and crime linked to cheap, unregulated alcohol. Producers, distributors, and retailers must comply with the December 2025 deadline. No extensions will be granted. The regulation reflects Nigeria’s commitment to global standards on alcohol harm reduction, with awareness campaigns to accompany the rollout. Enforcement is described as protective, not punitive, […]

Reps Warn Vendors Against Using Toxic Chemicals in Frozen Foods

The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the alleged use of toxic and cancer-causing chemicals to preserve frozen foods sold in Nigerian markets. The decision followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon. Deacon Chike Okafor (APC, Imo) during plenary, titled “Need to Investigate the Alleged Use of Harmful Chemicals as Preservatives for Frozen Foods in Nigeria.” Presenting the motion, Okafor expressed concern over reports that some vendors use industrial and embalming substances such as formalin, sodium hydroxide, and carbide to preserve perishable food items like fish, meat, prawns, and shrimps. He warned that these chemicals pose serious health risks, including cancer, organ damage, and developmental disorders in children, citing findings from health experts and regulatory agencies. The lawmaker also raised alarm over reports that some imported frozen foods and fast-food chains use unsafe additives such as Dimethylpolysiloxane […]
