El Rufai risks two year jail term on new cybercrime charges

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai faces up to two years in prison if convicted on fresh cybercrime charges filed against him over the alleged interception of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu’s phone calls. The Department of State Services accuses him of admitting on live television that he listened to recordings of Ribadu’s private conversations obtained through illegal phone tapping. The three count charge, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, is based on provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act 2024 and the Nigerian Communications Act 2003.
