Total Faces War Crimes Claims Over Mozambique Massacre

French energy company TotalEnergies is facing accusations of complicity in war crimes related to a 2021 massacre near its gas project in northern Mozambique. A human rights group has filed a complaint in France, alleging Total enabled or supported actions by local security forces who tortured and killed dozens of civilians at its facility. The events happened in Cabo Delgado, a region troubled by violent Islamist militants. In March 2021, after insurgents attacked the town of Palma near Total’s gas plant, Mozambican soldiers reportedly detained and executed civilians in shipping containers at the site. Some victims were accused of helping the militants, but the actual number killed remains unclear. One investigative journalist estimates at least 97 deaths, possibly more. Total has denied any involvement, saying it cannot be held responsible for actions of troops guarding its gas works. The company’s […]

FATF Removes Nigeria, South Africa, Mozambique, and Burkina Faso from Grey List

A global financial crimes watchdog, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), has officially removed South Africa, Nigeria, Mozambique, and Burkina Faso from its “grey list” of countries under increased monitoring for money laundering and terrorist financing concerns. The FATF, headquartered in France, announced the decision on Friday following what it described as “successful on-site visits” that confirmed significant progress by all four countries in addressing identified deficiencies within the agreed timelines. The organization maintains two key lists: the “grey list,” which includes countries making efforts to correct weaknesses in their anti-money laundering frameworks, and the “black list,” reserved for jurisdictions that pose the highest financial crime risks and show little cooperation. FATF President Elisa de Anda Madrazo called the delisting “a positive story for the continent of Africa,” noting that each country demonstrated substantial reforms. According to the FATF, South […]

Down the main aisle of a bustling conference pavilion in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, Lucia Matimele stood surrounded by lush green leaves, peppers on the stalk, and bunches of ripe bananas. “We have land, we have water, we have farmers!” she said with enthusiasm. “What we need is investment.” Matimele, the director of industry and commerce for Gaza province—one of Mozambique’s key agricultural regions about 200km (125 miles) from the capital—brought a display of the province’s most promising crops to the 60th annual Maputo International Trade Fair (FACIM). She joined thousands of other exhibitors from within and outside the country to showcase products and attract new business opportunities. The government has emphasized economic growth and investment this year despite political challenges. More than 3,000 exhibitors from nearly 30 countries are participating in the event, which runs for seven days and is […]
