US Congress lists steps to tackle Christian persecution in Nigeria

The United States Congress has outlined a series of measures it says are needed to tackle the growing persecution of Christians and wider insecurity in Nigeria. Lawmakers recommended reforms in security, justice, financial oversight and foreign policy as part of a broader strategy. The proposals follow a report prepared for President Donald Trump by a congressional panel he set up to investigate the situation of Christians in Nigeria. Congress urged the president to formally classify Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, name and shame perpetrators of attacks, impose sanctions on them and keep enforcing visa bans. The report describes Nigeria as one of the deadliest places in the world to be a Christian and cites years of violent attacks, killings, kidnappings and the destruction of churches and schools by armed groups, including Fulani militias and terrorist organisations. Lawmakers said […]

More strikes coming as FG, US detail Sokoto anti ISIS operation

Terrorists operating in northern Nigeria face more coordinated attacks after Nigeria and the United States carried out a joint strike on their locations in Sokoto State on Thursday night. Officials from both countries confirmed that the operation is part of ongoing actions against ISIS linked elements in the region. A US military official quoted by The New York Times said about a dozen Tomahawk missiles were deployed near the Niger Republic border, targeting Islamic State Sahel fighters accused of attacking security forces and civilians. Information Minister Mohammed Idris later clarified that 16 missiles were fired during the operation. Idris explained that debris from the missiles caused explosions reported in Offa, Kwara State, and Jabo in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State, triggering panic among residents. He stressed that the blasts came from falling missile fragments, not from direct bomb […]

Supreme Court Backs President’s Power On Emergency Rule And Temporary Suspension Of Elected Officials

The Supreme Court has upheld the President’s constitutional power to declare a state of emergency in any state where there is a threat of breakdown of law and order or a slide into chaos and anarchy. In a majority decision of six to one delivered on Monday, the court ruled that such a declaration can include suspending elected officials, provided the suspension is for a limited time and strictly tied to restoring normalcy. Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Mohammed Idris held that Section 305 of the Constitution empowers the President to deploy extraordinary measures once emergency rule is proclaimed. He noted that the section does not specify the exact nature of those measures, giving the President discretion on how best to stabilise the affected state. The case arose from a suit by Adamawa State and 10 other Peoples Democratic Party […]

S’Court orders FG to fully implement direct LG allocation judgment

The Supreme Court has criticised the Federal Government for failing to fully implement its July 2024 judgment directing that local governments’ allocations from the Federation Account be paid directly to them. In a lead judgment delivered by Justice Mohammed Idris in a suit filed by the Osun State Attorney General over alleged withheld LG funds, the court said there was no credible evidence that the Attorney General of the Federation had taken concrete steps to operationalise the earlier ruling in AG Federation v AG Abia and others, and ordered that the decision be implemented forthwith. While striking out the Osun suit in a 6–1 majority decision, the court held that the Osun AG lacked locus standi to sue on behalf of local governments because councils are constitutionally recognised, autonomous entities with their own legal capacity to sue and be sued, […]

No Religious Persecution, Genocide in Nigeria — FG, AU Refute Trump’s Claims

The Nigerian Federal Government and African Union have firmly rejected claims of religious persecution and Christian genocide within Nigeria, labelling the allegations as false and damaging to the country’s image. Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar demanded the full airing of his interview with Piers Morgan for transparency, arguing that selective edits could distort Nigeria’s reality and fuel false narratives. Information Minister Mohammed Idris emphasized that Nigeria guarantees religious freedom for all residents, stating that terrorism affects both Christians and Muslims indiscriminately, and is not religiously motivated. The government highlighted ongoing investments in security architecture to address terror and banditry, not religious conflict. African Union chair Mahamoud Ali Youssouf supported this by noting that Boko Haram’s primary victims are Muslims rather than Christians, and that labeling ongoing insecurity as genocide oversimplifies complex security challenges in Nigeria’s North. Nigerian Christian leaders, […]

Trump Designates Nigeria as ‘Country of Particular Concern’ Over Alleged ‘Christian Genocide’

United States President Donald Trump has declared Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” over what he described as an ongoing “Christian genocide,” warning that America would not “stand by while such atrocities continue.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Trump claimed that “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria,” alleging that radical Islamists are responsible for mass killings of Christians. “Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern,’” Trump stated.“The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria and numerous other countries. We stand ready, willing and able to save our Great Christian population around the world!” Trump’s statement follows similar comments from U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, who recently accused Nigerian officials of “ignoring and even […]
