Ghana Declares September 6 as National Sanitation Day

Ghana’s Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has declared September 6 as National Sanitation Day under the Clean-Up Ghana Agenda. The initiative, announced by Minister Ahmed Ibrahim, will see a nationwide cleanup on the first Saturday of every month across all 16 regions. The exercise will serve as a key performance indicator for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives, with high performers rewarded and poor performers risking removal from office. The government has released the MMDCEs’ common fund to support the programme and set up a call center for citizens to report waste management concerns. Motorcycles have also been distributed for patrols to ensure compliance. John Desmond Sowah Nai, Dean of Municipal Chief Executives, pledged the commitment of local authorities to maintaining a clean and healthy environment nationwide.

MPs demand action on Odaw River encroachers

Members of Ghana's Parliamentary Select Committee on Works and Housing have issued a strong call for immediate action against illegal encroachment along the Odaw River, emphasizing the critical need to address this issue to prevent recurring floods in Accra. During a recent inspection tour of the Odaw River dredging project, committee members expressed concern over the persistent presence of unauthorized structures along the riverbanks, despite previous compensation efforts aimed at relocating affected individuals. Committee Chairman Isaac Asiamah highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, "Sanitation must be taken seriously, and encroachers must be relocated. Mahama Revokes Appointments of Akufo-Addo’s Local Government Executives.

President John Dramani Mahama has revoked the appointments of all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCES) who served under the previous Akufo-Addo administration. This decision, effective immediately, was communicated in a letter signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, the Secretary to the President.The action aligns with President Mahama's vision to restructure local governance and ensure it supports the policies of his new government. The move is backed by the authority granted under the Local Government Act, 2016 (Act 936) and its 2017 amendment, Act 940. By this directive, all appointments made under these sections of the law have been nullified.
