China tells US its containment strategy is bound to fail

China has warned that United States efforts to contain its rise are doomed to fail, even as Beijing says it is willing to work with Washington to improve relations. Taiwan on high alert as China ends large scale drills

Taiwan has kept its military and coast guard on high alert even as Chinese naval and coast guard ships began pulling back after massive drills around the island. China’s “Justice Mission 2025” exercises saw dozens of rockets fired and large numbers of warships and aircraft deployed near Taiwan, prompting concern from Western allies.​ Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council said the maritime situation had started to calm, with Chinese vessels gradually leaving the area. China stages major military drills around Taiwan

China has launched large-scale military exercises around Taiwan, simulating the seizure and blockade of key areas of the island, in what it says is a warning to “separatist forces”. According to the Chinese military, the drills involve the army, navy, air force and rocket force, and include live-fire exercises. The operation, code-named Justice Mission 2025, comes just days after the United States approved one of its largest-ever arms sales to Taiwan, valued at about $11bn.
