First batch of US troops arrive Nigeria for anti terror mission

The first batch of United States military personnel has arrived in Nigeria to support new joint operations against terrorist groups in the country’s north. Officials say the deployment will focus on intelligence, training and advisory support for Nigerian forces rather than direct combat. Around 200 American troops are expected to take part in the mission, with the initial wave of about 100 soldiers landing in Maiduguri, Borno State. Russian Forces Help Repel ISIL Attack on Niger Airport

Russian soldiers assisted Nigerien forces in repelling a deadly attack claimed by the armed group ISIL (ISIS) on Niger’s main international airport in Niamey, according to a statement from Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In a release issued on Monday, Moscow said the assault was thwarted through the joint efforts of Russia’s Ministry of Defence African Corps and the Nigerien armed forces. “The attack was repelled through the coordinated actions of Russian and Nigerien forces,” the ministry said, strongly condemning what it described as a new extremist attack in the Sahel region. Gumi asks FG to halt military cooperation with US over ISIS bombing

Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Mahmoud Gumi has called on the Federal Government to immediately suspend all military cooperation with the United States following US airstrikes on ISIS targets in Nigeria. He warned that continued American involvement could worsen insecurity and undermine Nigeria’s national sovereignty.​ Gumi made his position known in a statement shared on his Facebook page.
