Climate migration in northern Ghana is reshaping culture

In northern Ghana, climate change has quietly but decisively altered the rhythm of life. Rainfall patterns are no longer reliable, dry seasons last longer, and crop yields continue to decline. For many farming families, uncertainty has replaced predictability. In response, migration has become less of a desperate last resort and more of a deliberate adaptation strategy. Rather than severing ties with their communities, families increasingly use migration to diversify livelihoods while maintaining strong connections to their ancestral homes. What is emerging is not a story of cultural loss, but one of continuity and reinvention. For rural households, land is more than an economic asset. It carries memory, kinship, and identity. Farms are sites where history is passed down, where rituals mark seasons, and where belonging is anchored. As climate pressures disrupt these systems, families are pushed to look beyond agriculture […]

Maduro offers talks as US signals openness to serious dialogue

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has offered an “olive branch” to U.S. President Donald Trump, proposing serious talks on issues including drug trafficking, migration and sanctions after months of post election tension and fresh U.S. pressure on Caracas.Speaking at a military event, Maduro said he was ready for direct dialogue “with respect and equality” and suggested both countries could work together on security and economic matters if Washington eased what he called “criminal” sanctions on Venezuela’s oil sector. U.S. officials, while sceptical of Maduro’s intentions, have indicated Washington could engage in serious talks if there is clear progress on political prisoners, human rights and credible electoral guarantees following disputed elections that extended Maduro’s rule. They have also hinted that U.S. sanctions could be adjusted depending on whether Caracas moves toward more inclusive politics and honours past agreements reached with the opposition in […]

Trump unveils strategy to shift US military focus closer to home

President Donald Trump has released a new national security strategy that calls for a major realignment of United States military deployments around the world. The document proposes a “readjustment” of the US global military presence, moving more forces and assets toward the Western Hemisphere to tackle what it describes as urgent regional threats, including migration, drug cartels and instability in Latin America and the Caribbean. According to the strategy, the US will gradually scale back its footprint in some overseas theatres, while boosting Coast Guard and Navy patrols to control sea lanes, curb illegal and unwanted migration, and disrupt human and drug trafficking routes. The plan also places heavy emphasis on strengthening ties with governments across Latin America to secure strategic resources, expand US private sector investment and reinforce what the document frames as “Western identity” and traditional values. While […]

EU, Africa Leaders to Talk Trade and Minerals as Ukraine Looms Large

Dozens of EU and African leaders, including France’s Emmanuel Macron, Germany’s Friedrich Merz, and Kenya’s William Ruto, assemble in Angola for a summit focused on trade, migration, and securing Africa’s critical raw materials. The summit, marking 25 years of EU–African Union relations, is set against tense US–EU diplomatic rifts over Washington’s Ukraine peace plan, widely criticized as favoring Moscow. Efforts to revamp EU-Africa ties reflect new competition from China, Russia, Gulf states, and Turkey, with Africa no longer relying solely on Europe as a partner. The EU remains the continent’s largest investor and commercial counterpart, but resentment over colonial history and China’s growing presence threaten its influence. Key priorities include: Boosting intra-African trade and economic development, with EU support for major infrastructure projects like Angola’s Lobito railway corridor. Tackling migration and security cooperation. Ensuring Africa’s voice in global governance. Securing […]

Dangerous smuggling methods, unseaworthy vessels, and gaps in rescue capacity contribute to high fatalities. IOM called for more effective […]
