GMA Denies Deaths in Elmina Fishing Harbour Accident

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has firmly dismissed media and social media reports claiming that eight people died in a marine accident at the Elmina Fishing Harbour on Monday, August 18, 2025. According to the Authority, all 27 crew members and fishers on board the vessel are alive and accounted for. Preliminary investigations by the GMA revealed that: A wooden fishing canoe with registration number CR 338EL collided with the sea defence structure at the harbour entrance shortly after setting off at 14:36 hours. All 27 crew members managed to swim safely to shore, with only minor bruises sustained. The vessel later sank during towing operations, leading to the loss of fishing gear.
