Philippines Evacuates 1 Million as Super Typhoon Fung-wong Nears Landfall
At least two people are dead and over a million evacuated as Super Typhoon Fung-wong lashes the Philippines, with sustained winds of 185 kph and gusts up to 230 kph threatening the main island of Luzon ahead of landfall in Aurora province. Heavy rains and strong winds have already cut power in large areas of the Bicol region. More than a million people left vulnerable areas, following defense officials’ warnings to heed evacuation orders for safety, while several airports (including Bicol International) were closed. So far, one person drowned in Catanduanes and another was found under debris in Catbalogan City.
