China probes top generals Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli
China’s defence ministry says the Communist Party has opened investigations into senior military figures Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli for suspected serious violations of discipline and law. Zhang is a Politburo member and vice chairman of the powerful Central Military Commission (CMC), while Liu serves as chief of staff of the CMC Joint Staff Department. Zhang, 75, is widely regarded as President Xi Jinping’s closest ally in the People’s Liberation Army and one of the few top officers with combat experience. He is a key architect of China’s military modernisation and one of two CMC vice chairmen overseeing the country’s armed forces.
