Liverpool beat Chelsea to £60m Rennes defender Jacquet

Liverpool have beaten Chelsea to the signing of Rennes centre back Jeremy Jacquet in a deal worth up to £60 million, according to British media reports. The 20 year old French Under 21 international will remain at Rennes until the end of the season despite Liverpool’s urgent need for defensive reinforcements. Jacquet had been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea earlier in January but was reportedly discouraged by the fierce competition for places in the London club’s already crowded pool of central defenders. Liverpool, by contrast, are short of options at the back. Captain Virgil van Dijk, 34, and Ibrahima Konate, who is out of contract in the summer, are currently the only fit senior centre backs available to manager Arne Slot, with Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni sidelined by injury. Since breaking into Rennes’ first team last season, […]

Marseille president Pablo Longoria has revealed that he consulted his mother before approving the controversial signing of former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood in 2024, calling it one of the toughest decisions of his career. He said he wanted an opinion completely detached from football, money and club interests before giving the green light. Longoria explained that the club viewed Greenwood’s arrival as a huge sporting opportunity but carried out extensive due diligence on the case first. Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 following his arrest on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and coercive behaviour, with all charges later dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew. Speaking to The Telegraph, Longoria said he called his mother, Begona Longoria, a former prison system worker in Spain who once received a state medal for her service.
